Byron Bay is one of those places that people either visit for a few days… or completely fall in love with.
And honestly?
I completely understand why.
During my Working Holiday in Australia, I spent around two months living in Byron Bay, and it quickly became one of the best experiences of my entire trip.
I worked there, explored the surroundings, went surfing, met amazing people, went out, and experienced what everyday life in Byron Bay actually feels like.
And that’s exactly what makes Byron Bay so special.
It’s not just another beach destination.
It’s a small surf town where life moves slower, where people smile at strangers, where you can walk around barefoot, spend your day at the beach and somehow always run into someone you know.
After a while, Byron Bay started to feel like home.
The town itself is relatively small, but that’s actually one of the things I loved most. Because everyone is there for a similar reason: enjoying life, meeting people and experiencing that famous Byron Bay lifestyle.
So… is Byron Bay worth visiting?
My answer: yes, absolutely.
Actually, I think many people make the mistake of only staying a few days.
Almost everyone I met who visited Byron Bay for just one or two days told me they wished they had stayed longer.
And I completely understand why.

Is Byron Bay Worth Visiting? My Quick Answer
The short answer: yes. Byron Bay is 100% worth visiting.
For me, Byron Bay was one of the highlights of my entire Australia adventure.
It has this unique combination of everything I love:
- Beautiful beaches
- Surf culture
- Amazing weather
- Nature
- Great food
- Markets
- Nightlife
- A social backpacker atmosphere
But the biggest reason I loved Byron Bay was the feeling.
It’s a place where you don’t just visit.
You experience it.
You wake up, grab a coffee, go surfing, meet friends at the beach, watch the sunset at the lighthouse and somehow end up having another unforgettable night.
It’s the kind of place where two weeks can easily turn into two months.
Which is exactly what happened to me.

I created a Google Map with 330+ saved places from my 9-month Australia trip, including towns, things to do, beaches, stays, cafés, nightlife and hidden gems to help you plan your route.

The Small Town Feeling
One of my favourite things about Byron Bay is that it’s not a huge city.
It’s a small surf town.
And honestly, that’s what makes it magical.
After spending some time there, you start recognising people everywhere.
You see the same faces at cafés, at the beach, at markets and during nights out.
It creates this amazing feeling of community that is difficult to find in bigger destinations.
For me, it made Byron Bay feel less like a place I was travelling through and more like a place I belonged.

The Beaches and Surf Lifestyle
If you love the ocean, Byron Bay is hard to beat.
You can literally surf every day.
Whether you’re a complete beginner or already experienced, there are beaches and surf schools for everyone.
But even if surfing isn’t your thing, the beaches are still incredible.
Spending your days swimming, relaxing, walking along the coast or watching the sunset became part of everyday life.
It’s the kind of lifestyle that makes you forget you’re actually travelling.

The Lighthouse Sunrise and Sunset Are Unreal
The Byron Bay Lighthouse is probably one of the most beautiful spots in Australia.
Walking up there for sunrise or sunset is something I would recommend to everyone.
The views over the coastline are incredible, and if you’re lucky, you might even spot dolphins swimming in the ocean below.
There’s something really special about standing there, looking over the ocean and realising how lucky you are to be in Australia.

There Is Always Something To Do
One thing I loved about Byron Bay is that it never felt boring.
Even though the town is small, there is always something happening.
During the day you can:
- Go surfing
- Explore beaches
- Visit waterfalls
- Go hiking
- Explore markets
- Discover cafés and shops
Some of my favourite places nearby were the beautiful Minyon Falls and the surrounding nature.
Then in the evening, Byron Bay completely changes.
There are always good bars, live music and places to go out.
It’s the perfect mix between relaxing beach days and fun nights.
The Food, Shops and Markets Are Amazing
Byron Bay has such a fun atmosphere when it comes to food and shopping.
The town is full of:
- Cute cafés
- Healthy food spots
- Restaurants
- Local shops
- Vintage stores
- Weekend markets
You can easily spend an afternoon just walking around town, discovering little places and enjoying the vibe.
Things I Didn’t Love About Byron Bay
It Might Feel Too Small For Some People
The only possible downside of Byron Bay is that it is quite small.
If you love big cities, endless attractions and constantly discovering new neighbourhoods, you might eventually feel like you’ve seen everything.
But personally?
That’s exactly what I loved about it.
The size is what creates the community feeling.
Finding Work Can Be Competitive
If you’re planning to work in Byron Bay on a Working Holiday Visa, there is one thing you should know:
A lot of travellers want to do the same thing.
Because Byron Bay is such a popular place to live, jobs can be competitive.
You might hear “no” quite a few times before getting a “yes”.
But don’t give up.
Once you find a job and settle into the Byron Bay lifestyle, it can honestly become one of the best experiences of your Working Holiday.
If you want tips on finding work in Australia, I also wrote a guide about how to find a job in Australia on a Working Holiday Visa.

Who Should Visit Byron Bay?
Byron Bay is perfect for you if you love:
- Surfing
- Beaches
- Backpacker culture
- Meeting people
- Small towns
- Nature
- Markets and cafés
- Nightlife
- A slower lifestyle
I especially recommend Byron Bay for solo travellers because it’s one of the easiest places in Australia to meet people.
You’ll arrive alone, but you probably won’t stay that way for long.
How Many Days Do You Need in Byron Bay?
I would recommend spending at least 4–5 days in Byron Bay.
This gives you enough time to:
- Explore the beaches
- Visit the lighthouse
- Try surfing
- Discover the town
- Visit nearby nature spots
- Experience the nightlife
However, if you have more time, Byron Bay is definitely a place where staying longer makes the experience even better.
I spent around two months there and honestly could have stayed even longer.

Final Thoughts: Is Byron Bay Worth Visiting?
For me, Byron Bay is one of the easiest yes answers.
It wasn’t just a beautiful place.
It became a chapter of my life that I will always remember.
The people, the beaches, the surf, the sunsets, the nights out and the feeling of community made it one of the best times of my Australia adventure.
Byron Bay is one of those places where you arrive thinking you’ll stay for a few days…
…and suddenly you’re still there two months later.
Would I recommend it?
100%.
Actually, I would recommend giving it more time than you think.
Because the magic of Byron Bay isn’t just seeing the highlights.
It’s living the lifestyle.
