Is the Great Ocean Road Worth Visiting? My Honest Review (2026)

The Great Ocean Road is one of Australia’s most famous road trips, and honestly, I think it deserves the hype.

The dramatic coastline, endless ocean views, rainforest, beaches and iconic Twelve Apostles make it one of those places where you constantly stop and think: “How is this real?”

During my Working Holiday in Australia, I did the Great Ocean Road from Melbourne with three friends, and it became one of my favourite trips from Melbourne.

But I do think there is one important thing to know:

The Great Ocean Road is absolutely worth visiting… if you do it properly.

A lot of people visit on a day tour from Melbourne, stop at the Twelve Apostles, take a few photos and leave. And while the Twelve Apostles are impressive, they are honestly only one small part of what makes a Great Ocean Road road trip special.

There are beaches, viewpoints, waterfalls, rainforest, coastal towns and plenty of smaller stops along the route that you can easily miss if you rush through it.

So, if you’re wondering “Is the Great Ocean Road worth visiting?”, here’s my honest experience after doing the road trip myself.

Is the Great Ocean Road Worth Visiting? My Quick Answer

Yes. Absolutely.

The Great Ocean Road is one of those experiences I think should be on almost every Australia itinerary, especially if you’re visiting Melbourne.

The combination of dramatic cliffs, turquoise ocean, beautiful beaches and the freedom of driving along one of Australia’s most scenic coastal roads makes it a memorable part of any Australia trip.

However, I wouldn’t recommend doing it as a rushed day trip if you have the choice.

The reason?

Because the Great Ocean Road is not just about the Twelve Apostles.

Some of the best parts are actually the smaller stops along the way: quiet beaches, coastal viewpoints, rainforest walks and little towns where you can slow down and enjoy the journey.

For me, spending more time there and staying overnight made the experience so much better.

What I Loved About the Great Ocean Road

The Scenery Is Honestly Incredible

The biggest reason to visit the Great Ocean Road is simple:

The views are unreal.

Driving along the coastline with the ocean next to you, stopping at viewpoints and watching the waves crash against the cliffs is one of those classic Australian experiences that really lives up to the hype.

Even after seeing photos beforehand, I was still surprised by how beautiful it actually was.

The landscape constantly changes too. One moment you’re driving past beaches and cliffs, and the next you’re surrounded by rainforest.

It feels like several completely different landscapes packed into one Great Ocean Road road trip.

It’s So Much More Than Just the Twelve Apostles

The Twelve Apostles are obviously the most famous attraction on the Great Ocean Road, and yes, they are beautiful.

But honestly?

They weren’t even my favourite part.

One thing I noticed is that many organised tours focus mainly on the Twelve Apostles and a few quick photo stops. While that’s a nice introduction to the area, you miss so much of what makes the Great Ocean Road special.

My favourite stops were the places where we could actually slow down, explore and enjoy the surroundings.

From beaches and viewpoints to smaller coastal towns and waterfalls, there is so much more to discover.

Doing It as a Road Trip Made It Even Better

For me, the best part wasn’t just the places we visited, but the whole experience.

I travelled with three friends, rented a car and turned it into a proper Great Ocean Road road trip from Melbourne.

We stayed overnight in Apollo Bay at a really nice hostel, which gave the whole trip those classic backpacker road trip vibes.

Cooking together, meeting other travellers, waking up near the ocean and not having to rush back to Melbourne made it feel like a real adventure.

This is honestly what I would recommend if you have the time.

Another reason I think the Great Ocean Road is worth visiting?

It’s incredibly easy to add to a Melbourne itinerary.

You don’t need to travel halfway across Australia to experience one of the country’s most beautiful road trips.

From Melbourne, you can reach the start of the Great Ocean Road in just a couple of hours, making it one of the most popular road trips and day trips from the city.

If you don’t have a car, renting one for a day or two is definitely possible.

A good tip: if you’re staying in a hostel, ask around! You might find other travellers who want to join and split the costs.

Things I Didn’t Like About the Great Ocean Road

A Day Trip Might Feel Too Rushed

The main downside?

Many people don’t spend enough time on the Great Ocean Road.

A day tour from Melbourne can be convenient, especially if you don’t have a car, but personally I don’t think it’s the same experience as doing the route yourself.

You spend a lot of time driving and often only have a short amount of time at each stop.

If your only goal is seeing the Twelve Apostles, a Great Ocean Road day trip can work.

But if you want to experience the Great Ocean Road itself, I would definitely recommend staying overnight.

That gives you more time for the beaches, viewpoints, waterfalls and coastal towns along the route instead of rushing from Melbourne to the Twelve Apostles and back.

The Weather Can Make a Big Difference

The Great Ocean Road is beautiful in any season, but I personally loved visiting during summer.

We had clear skies, warmer temperatures and even had the chance to swim at some of the beaches along the way.

The coastline looks completely different when the sun is shining, and it makes the whole road trip feel even more special.

That said, Australia’s weather can change quickly, so I wouldn’t plan your entire experience around having perfect sunshine.

How Long Do You Need for the Great Ocean Road?

If you’re wondering whether you can see the Great Ocean Road in one day, the answer is technically yes, but I would give yourself more time if possible.

A day trip from Melbourne works if you mainly want to see the major highlights, especially the Twelve Apostles.

For a more relaxed experience, staying overnight gives you time to explore more of the coastline and enjoy stops that aren’t just the most famous viewpoints.

That’s exactly what made my trip better: we weren’t constantly watching the clock.

If you have limited time, yes, it’s still worth seeing.

It’s about the journey.
