Is Koh Phangan Worth Visiting? My Honest Opinion After Almost Three Weeks

Is Koh Phangan worth visiting? Absolutely, but I have to admit that my feelings about this island were a little mixed while I was actually there.

After visiting Koh Samui, Koh Phangan and Koh Tao, I would put Koh Phangan in second place out of the three islands. Koh Tao was my favourite, but Koh Phangan definitely deserves a spot on your Thailand itinerary.

I spent almost three weeks on the island, staying at Kohmunity Hostel, and I genuinely enjoyed my time there. There were beautiful beaches, lovely viewpoints, waterfalls, fun parties and plenty of opportunities to meet other travellers.

At the same time, Koh Phangan has a very particular atmosphere. It’s incredibly relaxed, which can be both a good and a bad thing depending on what you’re looking for. Some days I loved the slow island lifestyle, while on other days I found myself wondering what I was actually doing there.

So, would I recommend visiting Koh Phangan? Yes. But here’s what I think you should know before going.

Is Koh Phangan Worth Visiting?

Yes, I definitely think Koh Phangan is worth visiting, especially if you’re travelling around Thailand and want a combination of beautiful nature, beach days and a social backpacker atmosphere.

What I liked most about Koh Phangan was the variety. You can spend your morning exploring a beautiful beach, visit a viewpoint or waterfall in the afternoon and end the day having drinks with people you’ve met at your hostel.

The island also has a much more laid-back atmosphere than I expected. Nobody seems to be in a particular rush, and there’s a very relaxed feeling almost everywhere you go.

However, that relaxed lifestyle isn’t necessarily for everyone. If you prefer destinations where there’s always something to see or do, you might occasionally find Koh Phangan a little too quiet. I sometimes had those moments myself, especially when the weather wasn’t great.

Another thing worth mentioning is the island’s party and cannabis culture. You’ll notice quite a lot of people smoking weed, and some places have a very strong stoner atmosphere. That’s obviously not everyone’s thing, and it wasn’t something I personally participated in. But it’s part of the island’s overall vibe and worth knowing before you visit.

Overall, I think Koh Phangan is a beautiful island with a lot to offer, as long as you enjoy a slower pace of travel.

My Experience: Almost Three Weeks on Koh Phangan

I spent almost three weeks on Koh Phangan, mainly staying at Kohmunity Hostel.

And honestly, I had a really good time.

One of the biggest reasons was the people I met. Kohmunity has a very social atmosphere, and there was almost always something happening. Whether it was hanging out by the pool, meeting people for dinner, going to a party or spontaneously making plans to explore the island, it was easy to find company.

I genuinely enjoyed my time there, but I also think staying somewhere so social influenced my experience of Koh Phangan quite a lot.

Sometimes I felt like I was constantly surrounded by people and activities. Other days, I just wanted to do something different or explore somewhere new.

I also had a few moments when I wondered what I was actually doing on the island. Not because I disliked it, but because Koh Phangan has such a relaxed atmosphere that you sometimes need to create your own plans.

And then there were the rainy days.

I visited in October, and unfortunately, it rained quite a lot during my stay. That definitely affected how much I could explore and how much time I could spend at the beach.

Still, looking back, I have genuinely lovely memories of Koh Phangan. The people, the beaches, the parties and the overall island atmosphere made it a place I would happily recommend.

The Beaches Are Beautiful

One of the main reasons I think Koh Phangan is worth visiting is its beaches.

I was honestly surprised by how many beautiful spots there were around the island. From small beaches surrounded by greenery to stretches of sand with incredibly clear water, there’s plenty to discover.

My personal favourite was Mae Haad Beach, especially because of the sandbank connecting the beach to a small peninsula. It’s one of those places that looks even more beautiful in real life.

I also really enjoyed Secret Beach, Malibu Beach, Zen Beach and Haad Khom.

Not every beach impressed me equally, though. Haad Yao and Salad Beach weren’t really my favourites during my visit. I found the water quite green and the overall scenery less impressive compared with some of the northern beaches.

Of course, beach conditions can change depending on the weather and season, so your experience might be different.

If you’re visiting Koh Phangan, I would definitely recommend spending some time exploring different beaches instead of staying in one area for your entire trip.

There’s More to Do Than Just Party

Koh Phangan is probably best known for the Full Moon Party, but I think it would be a shame to visit the island only for its nightlife.

There’s actually quite a lot to explore if you enjoy nature and outdoor activities.

You can visit different viewpoints, discover waterfalls, explore the northern coastline or simply spend an afternoon finding a quiet beach.

Some places I would recommend adding to your list include:

  • Mae Haad Beach: My favourite beach on the island, especially because of its beautiful sandbank
  • Haad Khom Viewpoint: A lovely spot to enjoy views over the northern coastline
  • Phasawan Viewpoint: Another viewpoint worth looking into
  • Namtok Than Sadet National Park: An option if you want to explore more of the island’s natural surroundings
  • Khao Ra Waterfall: A nature stop I visited during my time on the island
  • Yang Na Yai Tree: Something a little different from the usual beaches and viewpoints

You can easily spend a few days exploring the island without going to a single party.

The Party Scene Is a Big Part of Koh Phangan

Let’s be honest: the party scene is one of the reasons many backpackers visit Koh Phangan.

And I have to say, some of the parties are genuinely a lot of fun.

There’s the famous Full Moon Party, but also smaller jungle parties and events with different music styles. Whether you prefer commercial music, house or techno, you’ll usually find something happening somewhere on the island.

I personally enjoyed the parties, especially when going with people I had met at the hostel.

However, my biggest tip would be not to get too caught up in the party lifestyle.

When you’re staying somewhere very social like Kohmunity, there’s almost always something happening. It’s easy to end up going out several nights in a row simply because everyone else is going.

And while that’s part of the fun of backpacking, don’t forget to actually explore the island too.

I met people who stayed at quieter accommodation elsewhere but still came to Kohmunity for pre-drinks and socialising before heading out. So you definitely don’t have to stay in a party hostel to enjoy that side of Koh Phangan.

If you want to know which parties are worth checking out, I’ve included my experiences and the different options in my Koh Phangan Travel Guide.

Koh Phangan Has a Very Relaxed (Sometimes Too Relaxed) Atmosphere

This is probably the thing I noticed most about Koh Phangan.

Compared with some other destinations in Thailand, the island has a very laid-back atmosphere. People come here to relax, spend time at the beach, meet other travellers, go to parties and generally enjoy island life.

I loved that about Koh Phangan.

There wasn’t much pressure to do anything, and it was easy to fall into a slower routine. Some days were all about exploring, while others involved doing very little apart from hanging out with people at the hostel.

But I also think this is where the island can be a little hit or miss.

If you’re someone who likes having a full itinerary and constantly discovering new places, you might occasionally feel like there’s not enough going on.

I had those moments too.

It’s not necessarily that Koh Phangan is boring. It’s more that the island has a very specific pace, and you need to be comfortable with that.

For me, it was a nice change from constantly moving around, but I probably wouldn’t want to spend months there without exploring somewhere else in between.

Is Koh Phangan a Stoner Island?

Something else I noticed during my stay is how visible cannabis culture is on Koh Phangan.

You’ll come across cannabis shops and plenty of people smoking weed, especially in certain backpacker areas and social spots.

I personally don’t smoke weed, so it wasn’t really part of my experience on the island. But I did notice that it was quite a big part of the atmosphere for some travellers.

I wouldn’t say everyone visiting Koh Phangan is there for that reason, of course. There are plenty of people who come for the beaches, nature, yoga, parties or simply to enjoy island life.

Still, if you’re not into that scene, it’s worth knowing that you’ll probably notice it quite often.

Visiting Koh Phangan in October: Be Prepared for Rain

I visited Koh Phangan in October, and the weather wasn’t exactly what I had hoped for.

It rained quite a lot during my stay, which was a little disappointing when you’re visiting a tropical island known for its beautiful beaches.

Of course, it didn’t rain every single minute, and I still managed to explore quite a bit. But the weather definitely affected my experience.

If you’re planning a trip to Koh Phangan, I would pay attention to the season and check the expected weather before booking too much in advance.

October can be a particularly wet month in this part of Thailand, so don’t expect guaranteed sunshine every day.

Personally, I still enjoyed my time on the island, but I would love to return during a period with better weather and see how different the experience feels.

Koh Phangan vs Koh Samui vs Koh Tao: Which Island Is Best?

If you’re planning to visit the three islands in the Gulf of Thailand, you might be wondering which one is actually worth your time.

I visited all three, and if I had to rank them based on my personal experience, this would be my order:

1. Koh Tao – My Favourite

Koh Tao was my favourite out of the three islands. It simply clicked with me the most, although every island has something different to offer.

2. Koh Phangan – My Second Favourite

Koh Phangan comes in second place for me. I loved the beaches, the social atmosphere, the parties and the variety of things to do. It wasn’t perfect, but I have some really good memories from my time there.

3. Koh Samui – Worth Visiting, but Not My Favourite

I also enjoyed Koh Samui, but it didn’t impress me as much as the other two islands. I found some parts busier and less appealing than I expected.

That doesn’t mean Koh Samui isn’t worth visiting. It simply wasn’t the island I connected with the most.

You can read my full honest opinion about Koh Samui if you’re still deciding which islands to include in your Thailand itinerary.

Ultimately, I think all three islands are worth considering because they offer quite different experiences. If you have enough time, I would try to visit more than one rather than choosing based on other people’s rankings.

Who Should Visit Koh Phangan?

I think Koh Phangan is particularly worth visiting if you:

  • Enjoy beautiful beaches and tropical island scenery
  • Like a relaxed atmosphere and slower travel days
  • Want to meet other backpackers and make new friends
  • Enjoy parties, beach bars and jungle events
  • Like combining nature, viewpoints and beach days
  • Don’t mind a little spontaneity instead of planning every day

On the other hand, Koh Phangan might not be your favourite destination if you:

  • Prefer busy cities with lots of sightseeing
  • Don’t enjoy the backpacker or party atmosphere
  • Want guaranteed sunshine during your entire stay
  • Prefer having easy and affordable transport everywhere
  • Don’t enjoy destinations where you need to create your own plans

Of course, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t visit if you don’t fit every category. It just gives you an idea of what kind of atmosphere to expect.

How Many Days Do You Need in Koh Phangan?

I spent almost three weeks on Koh Phangan, but you definitely don’t need that long to experience the island.

For most travellers, I would recommend around four to five days.

That gives you enough time to explore several beaches, visit a few viewpoints or waterfalls, enjoy the social atmosphere and perhaps experience one of the parties.

If you’re mainly visiting for the Full Moon Party, you might choose a shorter stay. But I would still recommend leaving a little time to explore beyond Haad Rin.

And if you fall in love with the island, like I did, you might end up staying longer than expected.

Final Verdict: Would I Visit Koh Phangan Again?

Yes, I would.

Even though I had a few moments when I wondered what I was doing there, I look back on my time in Koh Phangan with a lot of good memories.

I loved the beaches, the relaxed atmosphere, the people I met and the parties. Staying at Kohmunity for almost three weeks also made my experience much more social, and I genuinely enjoyed that part of my trip.

Out of Koh Samui, Koh Phangan and Koh Tao, it would still be my second choice after Koh Tao.

But that doesn’t mean it isn’t worth visiting. I actually think Koh Phangan is one of those places where you can have a completely different experience depending on where you stay, who you meet and what you want from your trip.

My advice? Give it a few days, explore beyond the Full Moon Party and don’t feel like you need to be doing something every minute.

Sometimes the best part of travelling is simply enjoying where you are.
