If there’s one place in Australia I could go back to tomorrow, it would probably be Byron Bay.
During my Working Holiday, I ended up spending around two months living here. What started as a short stop quickly turned into one of the best chapters of my entire Australia adventure.
I worked, surfed, explored hidden beaches, discovered amazing cafés, watched countless sunsets and sunrises, and slowly started feeling like a local.
That’s why this guide is a little different.
Instead of simply listing tourist attractions, I’m sharing the activities I genuinely loved doing while living in Byron Bay.
Whether you’re visiting for a few days or planning to stay a little longer, these are the experiences I think you shouldn’t miss.

1. Watch the Sunrise at Cape Byron Lighthouse
If you only do one thing in Byron Bay, make it this.
Watching the sunrise from Cape Byron Lighthouse is one of the most magical experiences I’ve had in Australia.
You’ll have to wake up early, but trust me, it is 100% worth it.
The lighthouse sits on Australia’s most easterly point, making it one of the first places in the country to see the sunrise each day.
As the sun slowly rises over the Pacific Ocean, the sky turns shades of orange and pink, creating one of the most beautiful views in Byron Bay.
If you’re lucky, you might even spot dolphins swimming below or, during whale season, humpback whales migrating along the coast.
It may be popular, but it’s one of those moments you’ll never forget.

I created a Google Map with 330+ saved places from my 9-month Australia trip, including towns, things to do, beaches, stays, cafés, nightlife and hidden gems to help you plan your route.
Explore the Australia Map → €52. Learn to Surf
You can’t visit Byron Bay without trying surfing.
The town has one of the best surf cultures in Australia and is a fantastic place for beginners.
The water is warm, the waves are consistent and there are plenty of surf schools offering lessons every day.
Even if you’ve never stood on a surfboard before, Byron Bay is the perfect place to give it a go.
If you’re staying for a few days, I’d recommend taking more than one lesson, you’ll improve quickly and have so much fun.

3. Relax at Main Beach
Main Beach is the heart of Byron Bay.
It’s where backpackers, locals and surfers all come together, creating a really social and relaxed atmosphere.
Whether you want to swim, sunbathe, play beach games or simply read a book on the sand, it’s the perfect place to spend an afternoon.
I found myself coming back here almost every day.
There’s always something happening, but it never feels overwhelming.

4. Visit The Pass
Even if you don’t surf yourself, The Pass is worth visiting.
It’s one of Byron Bay’s most famous surf breaks and one of the best places to watch experienced surfers catch long, beautiful waves.
Grab a coffee, sit on the grassy hill and simply enjoy the view.
It perfectly captures Byron Bay’s relaxed surf lifestyle.
If you do surf, this is definitely one of the spots you’ll want to check out.
5. Walk the Cape Byron Coastal Track
One of the best free things to do in Byron Bay is walking the Cape Byron Coastal Track.
The trail takes you past beaches, cliffs, rainforest and some of the most beautiful viewpoints in the area.
You can combine it with your visit to the lighthouse or simply take your time and enjoy the scenery.
There are plenty of places to stop for photos, and it’s not unusual to spot dolphins along the way.
For me, this walk perfectly sums up what Byron Bay is all about.

6. Visit the Byron Bay Markets
If you’re visiting on the right weekend, don’t miss the Byron Bay Markets.
The markets are full of local artists, handmade jewellery, vintage clothing, delicious food stalls and live music.
Even if you’re not planning to buy anything, they’re simply a fun place to wander around and soak up the atmosphere.
It feels very “Byron”, creative, relaxed and full of friendly people.
7. Go Vintage Shopping in the Industrial Estate
One of Byron Bay’s hidden gems is its Industrial Estate.
Just outside the town centre, you’ll find some amazing vintage stores, outlet shops and second-hand treasures.
I honestly found some incredible bargains here.
Some of my favourite places include:
- Mr Vintage Byron Bay
- Fossil Vintage
- Habitat Collective
- Afends Factory Outlet
- Salvos Store
If you love thrift shopping, definitely make time for this area.
8. Make Your Own Bracelet at Trinkets
Looking for something a little different?
Visit Trinkets, a cute little bead shop where you can create your own bracelet or necklace.
It’s such a relaxing activity and a lovely way to make a personal souvenir from your trip.
I loved spending an afternoon here with friends, it was creative, fun and felt very much in line with Byron Bay’s artistic vibe.
9. Take a Day Trip to Minyon Falls
If you have access to a car, I highly recommend visiting Minyon Falls.
Located in Nightcap National Park, it’s one of the most beautiful waterfalls near Byron Bay.
The drive itself is stunning, and the viewpoints overlooking the waterfall and surrounding rainforest are absolutely worth the trip.
It’s a great reminder that Byron Bay isn’t just about beaches, there’s also incredible nature waiting just outside town.

10. Experience Byron Bay’s Nightlife
People often think Byron Bay is only about surfing, yoga and smoothie bowls.
But the nightlife is actually so much fun.
There are always bars with live music, backpacker nights and places where everyone somehow ends up dancing together.
Because the town is relatively small, you constantly bump into people you met earlier at the beach, in your hostel or at a café, which makes nights out feel even more social.
Some of my favourite memories from Byron Bay were simply going out with friends and seeing where the night would take us.

Final Thoughts
After spending two months living in Byron Bay, I can honestly say it’s one of my favourite places in Australia.
Yes, the beaches are beautiful.
Yes, the lighthouse is incredible.
And yes, the surfing is amazing.
But what really makes Byron Bay special is the feeling you get while you’re there.
Life slows down.
You spend your days at the beach, your evenings watching the sunset or listening to live music, and before you know it, you’ve completely fallen in love with the place.
If you’re planning an East Coast Australia trip, I honestly recommend staying longer than you think you’ll need.
Trust me, you probably won’t want to leave.
