Best Day Trips from Byron Bay: 5 Incredible Places to Visit (2026)

Byron Bay is one of my favourite places in Australia.

I spent around two months living here during my Working Holiday, and although I absolutely loved the beaches, cafés and surf culture, some of my favourite memories were actually made outside the town itself.

Within an hour or two from Byron Bay, you’ll find waterfalls, rainforest, hidden swimming spots, quirky little towns and peaceful places that many travellers completely miss.

If you’re staying in Byron Bay for more than a couple of days, I highly recommend renting a car or joining friends from your hostel to explore the surrounding area.

These are my favourite day trips from Byron Bay.

1. Minyon Falls

If I had to recommend just one day trip from Byron Bay, it would be Minyon Falls.

Honestly, this is one of the most beautiful places I visited during my entire time in Australia.

The waterfall is surrounded by lush rainforest, and the scenery almost doesn’t feel real.

If you’re up for a challenge, you can hike all the way down to the bottom of the falls. Be prepared though, it’s a fairly steep hike, and what goes down also has to come back up!

The reward is absolutely worth it.

At the bottom, you can swim beneath the waterfall, relax on the rocks and enjoy one of the most peaceful places I’ve ever experienced.

It quickly became one of my favourite spots in Australia.

2. Whian Whian Falls

Another hidden gem near Byron Bay is Whian Whian Falls.

Compared to some of the more popular attractions, this place feels much quieter and less touristy.

Surrounded by rainforest, the waterfalls create a peaceful atmosphere that’s perfect if you’re looking to escape the busy beaches for a day.

I remember feeling incredibly calm here.

It almost felt grounding, just sitting by the water and listening to the sounds of nature.

3. Tiki Tiki Lake (Suffolk Park)

Looking for something a little different?

Head to Tiki Tiki Lake near Suffolk Park.

The first thing you’ll notice is the colour of the water.

It almost looks like tea, but that’s completely natural and caused by organic material from the surrounding environment.

Locals often describe it as a peaceful place, and some even believe the mineral-rich water has healing qualities.

Whether that’s true or not, I can definitely say it feels incredibly relaxing.

It’s one of those hidden spots where you can slow down, float in the water and enjoy being surrounded by nature.

4. Visit Nimbin

If you’re looking for something completely different, take a day trip to Nimbin.

This tiny town has become famous for its alternative lifestyle, colourful streets and laid-back hippie culture.

Walking around Nimbin honestly feels like stepping into another world.

You’ll find quirky shops, colourful murals, local art and a very unique atmosphere that you won’t experience anywhere else in Australia.

Even if you only spend a few hours there, it’s a fun and memorable trip from Byron Bay.

5. Experience the Brunswick Heads Drum Circle

If you’re in Byron Bay on a Sunday, don’t miss the famous drum circle in nearby Brunswick Heads.

Every week, locals and travellers gather to play drums, dance, sing and simply enjoy the relaxed community atmosphere.

There’s no schedule, no tickets and no pressure to participate.

You can dance, sit on the grass, listen to the music or simply watch everything happening around you.

It’s one of those experiences that perfectly captures the Byron Bay lifestyle and community spirit.

Tips for Visiting These Day Trips

Most of these places are easiest to reach by car.

If you’re staying in a hostel, ask around, there’s a good chance other travellers will want to join you and split the rental costs.

Pack plenty of water, sunscreen, snacks and swimwear, especially if you’re visiting the waterfalls.

And don’t rush.

Part of the beauty of these places is simply slowing down and enjoying nature.

Final Thoughts

One of the reasons I loved Byron Bay so much was that there was always somewhere new to explore.

Whether it was hiking to Minyon Falls, swimming at Whian Whian Falls, floating in Tiki Tiki Lake, discovering colourful Nimbin or dancing at the Brunswick Heads drum circle, every trip felt completely different.

If you’re staying in Byron Bay for more than a couple of days, I definitely recommend venturing beyond the beaches.
