Trying to figure out how to find a job in Australia on a working holiday visa can feel overwhelming at first, but it becomes much easier once you know where to look.
The truth is: there isn’t just one way to find work, the fastest results come from combining multiple methods.
Here’s what actually worked for me during my time in Australia.

1. Facebook groups (underrated but powerful)
Facebook is one of the easiest ways to find jobs in Australia.
In almost every town or region you’ll find groups like:
- “Jobs in Port Macquarie”
- “Byron Bay Jobs”
- “Newcastle Backpackers Jobs”
Just search the location + “jobs” on Facebook and join the biggest groups.
What works best:
- Introduce yourself in a post
- Say where you are
- Say what job you’re looking for
- Ask if anyone is hiring
Even if nothing is posted, people often respond directly or message you. i got like 8 offers after 4 days of having posted my post.
2. Printing your CV & handing it out
This is the most “old-school” method, but it does work.
Print a simple, visible CV and walk into:
- cafés
- restaurants
- shops
- hostels
Give it directly to the manager if possible.
Important reality check:
Sometimes your CV will literally be thrown away because places get too many. Especially in popular areas like Byron Bay. Even my friends told me they sometimes did this themselves, because they knew how many CVs their managers were already receiving.
But I also know people who got jobs exactly this way.
The key is consistency. Go more than once, and don’t be afraid to try again with a different staff member.
3. Sending your CV by email
This is how I personally got one of my jobs.
Instead of waiting, I started emailing cafés, restaurants and bars directly.
What I did:
- Wrote a short introduction
- Said who I am and what I’m looking for
- Adapted the message to each place
- Attached my CV
I sent around 30 emails and got about 2 job offers.
That’s normal. You don’t need many replies, just one good one.
This is how I ended up working at Treehouse in Byron Bay, which I absolutely loved.

4. Online job boards
Online platforms are also useful, especially when you first arrive.
I found my tennis job through Backpacker Job Board, and friends found jobs via:
These platforms are good for structured listings and quicker applications.
But again, don’t rely on just one.
The most important rule
COMBINE ALL FOUR METHODS.
If you only use one, it will take much longer.
The fastest way to find a job is:
- Facebook groups
- CV drop-ins
- Email applications
- Online job boards
Use them all at the same time and see what works.
Extra tips (real experience)
Location matters
If you can’t find work in places like Byron Bay, move somewhere less competitive.
For example:
In Port Macquarie, I found 4 jobs in just one week.
Talk to locals
Locals often know:
- who is hiring
- which cafés need staff
- hidden job opportunities
This is seriously underrated.
Small side jobs (optional)
I also found jobs through care.com, like:
- babysitting in Port Macquarie
- cleaning jobs in Byron Bay
Normal rate is around $25/hour
Money-saving alternatives
Pet sitting
I used TrustedHousesitters.
- Pay yearly membership (~80 AUD)
- Stay for free in homes
- Take care of pets
Great way to save on accommodation.

Work exchange
Platforms like Worldpackers let you:
- Work a few hours per day
- In exchange for accommodation (sometimes food)
I didn’t use this much because I preferred earning money directly, but it works well for some travellers.
Final thoughts
If you want to find a job in Australia on a working holiday visa:
Don’t overthink it.
Just combine:
- CV drop-offs
- Emailing places
- Online job boards
That combination will get you a job much faster than relying on one method alone.
FAQ
What is the fastest way to find a job in Australia?
Using multiple methods at the same time: Facebook groups, emailing CVs, job boards and handing out CVs in person.
Do I need experience to get a job in Australia?
No. Many jobs in hospitality, cleaning, and babysitting don’t require any prior experience. However, if you want to work in roles that involve serving alcohol, such as bar work, you will need an RSA certificate (Responsible Service of Alcohol).
If you’re planning to do this, it’s a good idea to apply for it as soon as you arrive in Australia, because it can take some time to process. Without it, you won’t be allowed to work in any job that involves serving alcohol.
Is Facebook really useful for finding jobs?
Yes. In many towns it’s one of the fastest ways to find local work.
How many jobs should I apply for?
As many as possible. I sent around 30 emails for 2 job replies, that’s normal.
Can I find a job in small towns easier?
Yes. Smaller places often have less competition and more job opportunities.
