If you’re wondering “Is Sicily safe for solo female travel?”, my answer is a little complicated.
I absolutely love Sicily and would go back again without hesitation. But I also had one of the more uncomfortable experiences of my travels there, so I think it’s important to be honest about both sides.
If you’re still planning your trip, my Sicily Travel Guide covers my two-week itinerary, where I stayed, how I got around and what I learned while travelling around the island.
Is Sicily Safe for Solo Female Travellers?
Overall, I wouldn’t say Sicily is dangerous for solo female travellers. But I would recommend being aware of your surroundings, particularly when you’re out at night and in busy nightlife areas.
During my trip, I had an experience where a man literally grabbed my head and kissed me without my consent.
He then tried to do the same thing to my cousin.
Her reaction?
She started screaming at him.
And weirdly enough, it worked. He immediately backed off.
Obviously, I’m not seriously suggesting that screaming is your official Sicily safety strategy. But the experience did remind me of something that I think is much more useful:
Look after each other.
If you’re travelling with friends or meeting people at your hostel, don’t ignore someone who looks uncomfortable. Stay together when you’re out, especially late at night, and don’t be afraid to make a scene if someone seriously crosses a boundary.
Be Careful on Nights Out
I also noticed quite a lot of partying, drugs and generally chaotic nightlife in some parts of Sicily.
I heard stories from other travellers about drinks being spiked too, so I would personally be extra careful when going out.
Keep an eye on your drink, be aware of who you’re around and try not to end up completely alone if you’re already feeling uncomfortable or unsafe.
These aren’t Sicily-specific rules. They’re the same precautions I’d recommend when travelling solo or going out in any destination with a busy nightlife scene.

Would I Travel to Sicily Alone?
Yes.
Despite that experience, I absolutely loved Sicily and would happily return.
I felt completely comfortable in many parts of the island, and I had plenty of positive experiences with locals and other travellers.
I don’t think one uncomfortable incident means “Sicily is unsafe.” It means that travelling anywhere comes with situations you can’t always predict, and being aware of your surroundings can make a big difference.
If you’re travelling solo, I’d simply be a little more conscious of where you’re going, especially at night.
And if you’re staying in hostels, talk to other travellers and staff. I found that having people around me was one of the best parts of travelling through Sicily anyway.

My Sicily Safety Tips for Solo Female Travellers
- Stay aware of your surroundings, especially at night.
- Stick with people you trust when going out.
- Keep an eye on your drink.
- Don’t be afraid to leave a situation that feels uncomfortable.
- If someone crosses a serious boundary, get loud and attract attention.
- Ask hostel staff or locals about areas you’re unsure about.
- Keep your phone and valuables secure in busy areas.
- Trust your instincts if something doesn’t feel right.
So, Is Sicily Safe for Solo Female Travel?
Yes, I would travel there again as a solo female traveller.
But I wouldn’t travel completely unaware of my surroundings either.
Sicily is a place I genuinely love, and I don’t want one bad experience to define the whole island. At the same time, pretending uncomfortable situations never happen isn’t helpful either.
For me, the takeaway is simple: enjoy Sicily, but look after yourself and the people you’re travelling with.
