Wondering about the best time to visit Sicily? Honestly, I don’t think there is one perfect month for everyone.
I visited Sicily during summer and genuinely loved it. But Italy can get very hot in summer, and Sicily is no exception. So while I’d absolutely recommend visiting in summer if you love warm weather and swimming, I’d choose spring or early autumn if you don’t handle heat particularly well.
If you’re still planning your overall trip, my Sicily Travel Guide covers my 2-week itinerary, where I stayed, how I got around and my practical tips from travelling around the island.
Is Summer a Good Time to Visit Sicily?
Yes, but only if you like hot weather.
I usually don’t recommend summer for travelling around Italy because temperatures can get intense, especially when you’re spending whole days walking around cities.
However, Sicily is one of the Italian destinations where I actually think summer makes a lot of sense.
Why? The water.
Sicily is perfect for swimming, beaches, boat trips, snorkelling and other water activities. When it’s hot outside, being able to spend part of your day in the sea makes a huge difference.
I visited Sicily in summer and absolutely loved it. Just don’t underestimate how hot it can get.
If you know that you struggle with high temperatures, I’d personally choose another time of year.
I also wrote more about whether Sicily is worth visiting after spending two weeks travelling around the island, including what I loved and what I found more difficult.

Best Time to Visit Sicily: Spring & Autumn
For me, May, September and early October are great alternatives to the hottest summer months.
May
May can be a great time to visit if you want warm weather without the peak summer heat.
It’s particularly nice if you’re planning to explore cities, go sightseeing and do a lot of walking.
September
September would probably be one of my first choices.
You can still get plenty of warm, beach-friendly weather, while temperatures can be more comfortable than during the height of summer.
It’s a good middle ground if you want both sightseeing and swimming.
If you’re still figuring out how long to spend on the island, I’ve also put together a guide to how many days you need in Sicily, with itinerary ideas from 3 days to 2 weeks.

Early October
Early October can also work well if you’re more interested in exploring than having a guaranteed beach holiday.
You may still get warm days, but weather becomes less predictable as autumn progresses.
What About Winter in Sicily?
Sicily can still be interesting in winter, particularly if you’re interested in food, history and cities rather than beaches.
But personally, I wouldn’t choose Sicily as my first European winter destination.
There are other European destinations I’d rather visit during winter, especially if you’re looking for a proper winter atmosphere.
So if your main reason for visiting Sicily is beaches, swimming and water activities, I’d definitely choose another season.
Sicily by Season
| Season | My take |
|---|---|
| Spring 🌸 | Great for sightseeing and comfortable temperatures |
| Summer ☀️ | Great for beaches & water activities, but very hot |
| Autumn 🍂 | Great balance of warm weather and sightseeing |
| Winter ❄️ | Possible, but not my first choice |
So, When Should You Visit Sicily?
If you love hot weather and want to spend lots of time in the water, summer can absolutely be worth it. That’s exactly what I enjoyed about my own trip.
If you want to explore Sicily without constantly dealing with intense heat, I’d look at May, September or early October.
For me, the biggest question isn’t really “What is the best month to visit Sicily?” but rather:
What kind of holiday do you want?
Beach holiday and water activities? Summer.
Road trip, sightseeing and exploring? Spring or early autumn.
Winter city break? I’d personally choose somewhere else in Europe.
