8 Best Things To Do In Saas-Fee, Switzerland

Saas-Fee is one of those places in Switzerland that feels almost unreal. Surrounded by towering Alpine peaks, glaciers and beautiful mountain scenery, this little village is worth visiting in both summer and winter.

While Saas-Fee is famous for skiing, there is so much more to do here. From alpine coasters and scenic viewpoints to marmots, black nose sheep and even enjoying fondue in a gondola, you can easily fill several days here.

I visited Saas-Fee during a trip through Switzerland and combined it with stops in Italy, which made it such a fun destination to add to my itinerary.

Whether you’re visiting in summer or winter, here are 8 of the best things to do in Saas-Fee.

1. Go Skiing In Saas-Fee

Of course, one of the main reasons people visit Saas-Fee is skiing.

The village is surrounded by incredible mountain scenery, and the ski area offers a mix of long runs, lifts and beautiful Alpine views.

What I loved about Saas-Fee is that skiing feels like such a big part of the village itself. You don’t just visit a ski resort and leave again, the whole atmosphere feels connected to the mountains and winter sports.

The high-altitude location also means Saas-Fee is a popular destination for winter sports.

Even if you’re not an experienced skier, the scenery alone makes it worth spending some time here during winter.

Best for: winter sports lovers and anyone looking for a classic Swiss Alps experience.

2. Ride The Feeblitz Alpine Coaster

Looking for something a little more exciting?

The Feeblitz is an alpine coaster that takes you down the mountain with incredible views of the surrounding Alps.

You control your own speed, making the ride as relaxed or adventurous as you want.

And the best part? You don’t need to be a skier to enjoy it.

This makes the Feeblitz a great activity if you’re travelling with friends or family and not everyone is interested in skiing.

It’s also one of those activities that is just genuinely fun, rather than being another viewpoint where you simply take a few photos and leave.

Best for: families, adventure lovers and anyone who wants a break from hiking.

3. Take The Lift Up To Hannig

One of the best places to enjoy the views around Saas-Fee is Hannig.

You can take the lift up from the village and enjoy spectacular views over Saas-Fee and the surrounding mountains.

One of the highlights is the famous swing overlooking the Alps.

Standing there with the mountains stretching out behind you is one of those moments where you just stop and appreciate how beautiful Switzerland is.

Hannig is also a great starting point for several hiking routes, so you can easily combine a visit with a hike.

If you’re visiting in summer, I’d definitely put Hannig on your list.

Best for: mountain views, photography and easy access to the Alps.

4. Meet The Famous Black Nose Sheep

One of the cutest experiences you can have around Saas-Fee is meeting the famous Swiss black nose sheep.

These fluffy sheep have become one of the most recognisable animals in the region, thanks to their curly wool, black faces and ridiculously cute appearance.

You can see them grazing in the mountains around Saas-Fee during the summer months.

They are surprisingly friendly, and getting to see them in their natural Alpine surroundings is such a fun experience.

If you’re travelling with children, this is especially worth adding to your itinerary, although let’s be honest, adults will love them just as much.

Best for: animal lovers, families and cute photo opportunities.

Hiking In Saas-Fee

If you’re visiting Saas-Fee in summer, hiking should definitely be on your list.

The landscape completely transforms once the snow disappears, with green Alpine meadows, mountain lakes, glaciers and incredible views everywhere you look.

There are hiking routes for different fitness levels, from easy walks to longer and more challenging trails.

Here are three hikes worth checking out:

5. Hike The Hannig Sun Trail

The Hannig Sun Trail is a relatively easy hike of around 4 kilometres.

The trail offers beautiful views over the surrounding mountains without requiring an extremely difficult climb.

It’s a great option if you want to experience the Alpine scenery without committing to an all-day hike.

And because Hannig is already a great viewpoint, you can easily combine the two activities.

Best for: beginners and travellers looking for a shorter scenic hike.

6. Walk The Spielboden Murmeli Trail

If you want to see one of the cutest animals in the Swiss Alps, head to the Spielboden Murmeli Trail.

This family-friendly trail is known for its marmots, also known as marmots or Alpine groundhogs.

The animals are one of the highlights of visiting this part of Saas-Fee, and if you’re lucky, you can see them around the trail.

The route is particularly popular with families, but you definitely don’t need to be travelling with children to enjoy it.

Best for: families, animal lovers and an easy day outdoors.

7. Hike The Ibex Trail

For something more challenging, check out the Ibex Trail.

At around 11 kilometres, this is a much longer hike and is better suited to people who are comfortable spending several hours in the mountains.

The trail is named after the Alpine ibex, the impressive wild mountain goat that lives in the Alps.

Along the way, you’ll get incredible views of the surrounding mountain landscape.

If you’re looking for a more active day in nature rather than a short scenic walk, this is a great option.

Best for: experienced hikers and anyone wanting a longer Alpine adventure.

8. Have Fondue In A Gondola

Looking for something completely different?

One of the most unique experiences in Saas-Fee is the Fondue Gondola.

Instead of taking a gondola up the mountain, you sit inside a cosy gondola and enjoy a traditional Swiss fondue experience.

You’ll get to enjoy cheese fondue, Valais wine, tea, dessert and schnapps while surrounded by beautiful mountain scenery.

The experience lasts around one hour and costs approximately CHF 70 per adult, although prices can change.

This is such a fun way to experience Swiss culture beyond skiing and hiking.

If you’re visiting in winter, this would be such a cosy activity after a day in the mountains.

Best for: couples, foodies and anyone looking for a unique Swiss experience.

If you’re visiting Saas-Fee during summer, I’d focus on:

Summer is especially beautiful because the mountains are surrounded by green Alpine meadows and wildflowers.

It’s also the best season if you want to spend most of your time outdoors.

Best Things To Do In Saas-Fee In Winter

Winter gives Saas-Fee a completely different atmosphere.

The village becomes a snowy Alpine wonderland and skiing becomes one of the main attractions.

My top winter activities would be:

  • Skiing
  • Enjoying the mountain views
  • Fondue in a gondola
  • Riding the Feeblitz
  • Exploring the snowy village

Even if you’re not skiing, Saas-Fee is still worth visiting in winter. You can enjoy the scenery, cosy restaurants and the beautiful atmosphere of a traditional Swiss mountain village.

In winter, however, I would easily stay for a week. If you’re coming to ski, you can spend your days on the slopes and still have plenty of time to enjoy the village, the mountain scenery and some après-ski or cosy Swiss experiences.

What can you do in Saas-Fee if you don’t ski?

There is plenty to do without skiing. You can hike, visit Hannig, see black nose sheep and marmots, ride the Feeblitz alpine coaster or enjoy a Swiss fondue experience in a gondola.
