Broken Bikes, Beach Days & Byron Drama (Aus part 16)

Introduction

Life in Byron is starting to feel like a weird mix of routine and total unpredictability.

One moment you’re cleaning houses and eating avocado toast… the next you’re chasing your stolen bike through town, arguing with a guy you just met, or ending up at a random drum festival.

This week? A bit chaotic. A bit dramatic. But also full of those small, real moments that make backpacking exactly what it is.

Main Adventure

Monday – Work, Heat & Instant Karma (Almost)
Started the day cleaning at Claire’s.
Their house was so dirty, but honestly, I didn’t even care because… money.

Took an orange with me (small win), then headed to Treehouse.

Nacho made me avocado toast with egg (blessed), and because it was insanely hot, I asked for an iced coffee saying “because I’m so hot”
and the guy replied: “yes, you are very hot”.

I mean… valid.

At work I got a burger, which I obviously ate with Ingrid and Mara by the pool, our usual little routine at this point.

After work, we went to the beach. Tried surfing, but the waves were HUGE, so that didn’t last long.

Plan for the evening was a cute picnic with Ingrid…

…which turned into going to Arts Factory instead. Classic.

Ella was there too, but her friend was a bit boring, so I mostly hung out with Ingrid, who was busy talking to two guys the entire time.

Then suddenly: Tess from surf camp in Sydney appeared.
And she was talking to him, the cute friend of Ingrid (let’s call him Chad).

Except… he clearly wasn’t interested in her.

I talked to him a bit, and he goes:
“You’re always staring at me.”

Excuse me??
That is simply not true.

If anything, he was staring at me.

Anyway, also saw Agustin (Argentinian guy from Ingrid’s room, last night in Byron), so we all went to Main Beach to continue the night.

And then… chaos.

Chad asked to borrow my bike. Fine.

Next thing I know? He gives it to some random girl.

So there I was, jumping on the back of some random guy’s bike, chasing my own bike through Byron.

We found them at the pie shop.
My helmet? Thrown into a random bush.

At this point, I was done.

Ingrid told Chad he should at least buy me a pie as an apology.

His response?
“You can have a bite of mine.”

Sir???

I said I didn’t even like that pie.
He goes: “Not my problem.”

Yeah. No.

Conclusion of the night: FUCK YOU CHAD.

Tuesday – Consequences & Cozy Recovery
Next morning, Chad casually walks down the stairs like nothing happened.

No apology.

Even better? He apparently fell with my bike, so now the gears are broken.

Lesson learned: never lend your stuff to random backpackers. Ever.

Went to work, tried to ignore the annoyance.

In the evening, it started raining, so Mara, Ingrid, and I just stayed in and watched a movie on Ingrid’s bed.

Simple. Cozy. Exactly what I needed after that chaos.

Wednesday – Nimbin & Soft Chaos Again
Day off!

Mara had to work until 12, and then we went to Nimbin with Jill and Ella.

And honestly?
It was… disappointing.

Two streets. Some hippie shops. That’s it.

Exploring Nimbin, a quirky hippie town near Byron Bay during my Australia backpacking trip

Not the magical place people hype it up to be.

In the evening, we planned to go out, but Mara suddenly felt really sad and didn’t want to go because she thought she looked bad, which is honestly insane because she’s gorgeous.

Sat with her, talked, reassured her a bit, then we ended up just sitting outside with Jill.

Jill and I opened some wine, started chatting with random guys from Chilli, and somehow built a whole little group.

Ended up going out anyway, with Gemma, some Spanish people, and even a group of guys from Toronto.

Spoke to one of them for a while, very sweet, but… yeah. Not my type.

Also kissed Jill at some point.
Just Byron things.

Went to Woody’s, but the music wasn’t great, so we didn’t stay long.

Thursday – Work & Maybe a Crush?
Double shift day.

Apparently, one of the Chilli guys had been asking Jill about me…
So maybe someone has a little crush??

Worked the evening shift with Danique (not Ingrid, sadly). She was nice, but way too fast-paced. I prefer a slower vibe, more hours = more money.

Friday – Too Tired to Party
I was exhausted.

After work, I went surfing with Ella, but the waves weren’t great.

Originally planned to go out, but she went to Surfhouse with some girls and I just… couldn’t.

Instead, Ella and another girl came over, and we played cards and drank some wine.

Honestly? Perfect night.

Saturday – Rain & Reset
Worked, got ready to go out…

…and of course, it started raining.

So instead, I just chilled with Jill and went to bed early.

Not every night has to be chaotic.

Sunday – Beach, French Boys & Brunswick
Worked a longer shift, then went to the beach with Benoit, Antoine, and Vincenzo (guys from my room).

Before that, had a little gossip session with Jill, essential.

At the beach, Benoit asked if we wanted to go to Brunswick for the weekly drum festival.

So later, Jill, Antoine, and I drove there in his van.

The festival itself was actually really cool, music, people dancing, chill vibes.

But the group we were with… not it.

They were constantly speaking French and honestly just a bit rude, so it felt hard to really connect.

We grabbed some chips and a burrito, then decided to leave around 9 and head back to the hostel.

Romance / Encounters

This week was less romantic… and more chaotic.

Chad: immediate no.
Agustin: such a nice guy!! Still a soft spot.
Random Toronto guy: sweet, but no spark.
Jill: love my girl <3

And apparently… someone from Chilli might have a crush on me?

We’ll see.

Tips & Tricks

  • Never lend your bike (or anything) to random backpackers
  • Not every hyped place (like Nimbin) is worth it
  • Stay in when you’re tired, those nights can be the best ones
  • If someone disrespects you, don’t ignore it
  • The best moments often happen when plans change

Reflection

This week felt a bit more real.

Less “perfect travel moments” and more… everyday life.
Annoyances, small conflicts, tiredness, doubts.

But also cozy nights, real conversations, and moments where I just felt comfortable.

And maybe that’s part of it too.

Not every week needs to be magical.

Sometimes it’s about learning where your boundaries are, who your people are, and what you’re willing to accept.

And apparently: I’m no longer accepting guys like Chad.

Growth.

Wherever I am next, I’m learning that even chaos can feel like a beginning.
