Best Time to Visit Western Australia (When I Would Go Again)

When I planned my trip along Australia’s West Coast, I quickly realised that Western Australia is a destination where timing matters more than most people think.

The state is enormous, stretching from the tropical north around Exmouth and Broome all the way down to Perth and the Margaret River region. That means the weather can be completely different depending on where you are.

For me, two things matter most when choosing the best time to visit Western Australia: sunshine and wildlife. Western Australia is home to some of the most beautiful beaches in Australia, and trust me, you want to see them under blue skies. On top of that, many of the state’s biggest attractions revolve around wildlife experiences, from whale sharks in Exmouth to wildflowers in spring.

I visited Western Australia in May and honestly thought it was perfect. The temperatures were comfortable, the skies were mostly clear, and it was warm enough to enjoy the beaches without dealing with the extreme summer heat.

In this guide, I’ll explain the best time to visit Western Australia, the worst time to visit Western Australia, and which months I would personally choose if I were planning another trip.

My Experience Visiting Western Australia

I travelled Western Australia during May as part of my Perth to Exmouth road trip.

One thing that surprised me was how much cooler it felt than I expected. When people think of Australia, they often imagine constant heat, but that wasn’t my experience at all. Mornings could be quite chilly, and places like the Lancelin Sand Dunes were surprisingly cold once the coastal wind picked up.

That said, I absolutely loved travelling during autumn. The weather was comfortable for long drives, hiking, and sightseeing, and I never felt exhausted by the heat. Most importantly, I could actually enjoy the beaches without melting in the sun.

If I were planning another Western Australia trip tomorrow, I’d probably choose April or May again. As you can read in my travel diary about my Perth to Exmouth road trip, I go into more detail about what those autumn conditions were actually like on the road.

Seasons in Western Australia

Summer in Western Australia (December–February)

Summer can be fantastic in Perth and the southwest, but it comes with a few challenges.

Temperatures regularly climb above 35°C, and some days can become extremely hot. While Perth benefits from a cooling sea breeze known as the “Fremantle Doctor”, sightseeing and hiking can still be uncomfortable during peak afternoon heat.

Northern Western Australia is a different story entirely.

Places like Exmouth, Broome and the Kimberley enter their wet season, bringing tropical storms, humidity, and occasional flooding. Some roads and attractions may even become inaccessible.

Unless you’re specifically visiting Perth or Margaret River, I would generally avoid northern Western Australia during summer.

Autumn in Western Australia (March–May)

In my opinion, autumn is the best time to visit Western Australia.

The intense summer heat starts to disappear, rainfall is still relatively low, and beach conditions remain excellent.

March also marks the beginning of whale shark season in Exmouth, which is one of the most incredible wildlife experiences in Australia.

By April and May, temperatures become much more comfortable across most of the state. This is exactly when I visited and I genuinely couldn’t have asked for better conditions.

Winter in Western Australia (June–August)

Winter can be a bit of a mixed bag.

Perth and the southwest become significantly wetter, with frequent rain and cooler temperatures. While it’s rarely freezing, it’s definitely not beach weather every day.

The upside is that northern Western Australia enters its dry season.

Exmouth, Broome and the Kimberley enjoy sunny skies, warm temperatures and some of the best weather of the year.

If your trip mainly focuses on the north, winter can actually be an excellent choice.

Spring in Western Australia (September–November)

Spring is another fantastic time to visit Western Australia.

Temperatures begin warming up again, rainfall decreases, and the state becomes famous for its wildflower season.

Large parts of Western Australia burst into colour, attracting visitors from around the world.

This is similar to spring on Australia’s East Coast, for example in Sydney, where temperatures also become mild and ideal for coastal walks and beach days.

Spring is also ideal if you want pleasant temperatures without the extreme summer heat.

If I couldn’t travel in autumn, spring would be my second choice.

This is comparable to places like Byron Bay, where spring brings perfect conditions for beach time and outdoor lifestyle experiences.

Best Time to Visit Exmouth & Ningaloo Reef

For many travellers, Exmouth is one of the main reasons to visit Western Australia.

If swimming with whale sharks is on your bucket list, you’ll want to plan carefully.

Whale shark season generally runs from March until July, making autumn and early winter the best time to visit Exmouth.

This was one of the biggest reasons I chose to travel during May.

Best Time to Visit Western Australia Beaches

If beach weather is your priority, I’d recommend travelling between October and May.

The water is warmer, rainfall is lower, and you’ll have a much better chance of those postcard-perfect beach days.

Since Western Australia’s coastline is one of its biggest highlights, I personally think sunshine should play a major role in deciding when to visit.

Best Time to Visit Western Australia for Wildflowers

Western Australia’s wildflower season usually peaks between August and October.

During spring, millions of wildflowers bloom across the state, transforming landscapes that look dry for most of the year.

This is one of the most unique times to visit Western Australia and something I’d love to experience on a future trip.

When NOT to Visit Western Australia

If you’re flexible with dates, these are the times I would personally avoid:

January and February

  • Extremely hot temperatures in Perth and the south.
  • Wet season in the north.
  • Higher accommodation prices due to school holidays.

July if your main goal is beaches

  • Cooler temperatures.
  • More rain around Perth and the southwest.
  • Less reliable beach weather.

Of course, every season has its advantages, but for a classic Western Australia road trip, I think there are better options.

So, What Is the Best Time to Visit Western Australia?

If I had to pick just one period, I’d choose April and May.

You avoid the extreme summer heat, enjoy mostly dry conditions, experience fantastic beach weather, and can still swim with whale sharks in Exmouth.

For me, that’s the sweet spot.

Final Thoughts

The best time to visit Western Australia depends on what you’re looking for, but for most travellers I’d recommend autumn or spring.

Western Australia surprised me far more than I expected, and the timing definitely played a role in that. Warm beach days, comfortable temperatures, incredible wildlife experiences and endless road trip views made it one of my favourite regions in Australia.
