Byron Bay Travel Diary Part 4 | Hostel Life & New Friends

Introduction

Byron Bay keeps shifting.

Just when I think I’ve figured it out, where to stay, who my people are, what I want, it all changes again. New hostel, new routines, new faces… and somehow the same chaos following me around.

This week felt like a mix of trying to be responsible (work, money, planning) and completely failing at it (nights out, confusing situations, impulsive decisions).

Also… apparently, I’m part of a love triangle now? Not intentional. Not ideal.

Main adventure

Sunday – New Hostel, New Ideas & Old Patterns
Checked out of Aquarius and moved into Backpackers Inn (it no longer exists now sadly).

After work, I ended up talking to a random guy, Joe, who casually mentioned he’s staying at a campsite for $150 a week, with a pool, kitchen, everything. Suddenly, Mara and I are considering van life… or at least something cheaper, because Byron is draining my bank account fast.

Went to the beach after, looked at surfboards for Ella, and made a failed attempt to get my sunglasses back from Giulio. “Not home.” Of course.

Later, Mara dropped a little bomb: she thinks one girl has a crush on me.

Me? I thought it was just… fun.

Apparently not.

Noted: maybe stop kissing this girl.

Monday – Cleaning Jobs & Tomato Face Energy
Started the day at 7:30 cleaning Claire’s house. Two laundry baskets, full clean, mopping everything, and still done in 2.5 hours but paid for 3. Not complaining.

Then came the bike ride to work.

20 minutes. Heat.

I arrived at Treehouse looking like a literal tomato. One of the waiters immediately offered me a cold drink, and Juan held up a red box next to my face saying it matched. Rude… but accurate.

Joe said he’d meet me after work. He didn’t.

So I went to Main Beach instead, where somehow everyone slowly appeared: Jan, Joe (with another Joe, confusing), Ella, and even Jack (the Aquarius weirdo).

Jan said it was his last day and asked if I wanted pancakes. Obviously yes.

We ended up back at Aquarius making pancakes with Mara and Ella, while Mara kept reminding me about the “girl situation”… which I kept ignoring.

Also saw Ingrid again, she’s now in our hostel. And we made plans for the staff party next week.

Chaos, but good chaos.

Tuesday & Wednesday – Quiet Days (Finally)
Not much happened.

Work, chill, repeat.

Honestly, kind of needed.

Thursday – Double Shift & Spanish Nights
Double shift at work.

In the evening, I worked with Ingrid again, and she insisted we go out after. So we went to Casa Luna, $10 entry, Spanish music, packed crowd.

And honestly? Worth it.

Marcus (from our old hostel room) randomly showed up working there, Ingrid knew literally everyone, and I was just… floating somewhere in between.

Not fully part of it, but still enjoying it.

Friday – Rails, Mixed Signals & Letting Go
Worked again, then found out Josh (the cute English guy from my room) is friends with Lucas from work.

Small world.

Lucas suggested going to Rails, and even though I didn’t have Josh’s contact or anything, I went with Mara.

It was actually such a good night. Good music, good vibe, a lot of attractive people (not complaining).

But this girl kept trying to hold my hand.

And this time… I didn’t ignore it. I gently pulled away.

I think she got the message.

Also ran into “Nacho” from work (no idea what his real name is), who is permanently smiling. I swear I’ve never seen him not happy.

Before going out, Mara and I played volleyball and met three Israeli guys, super fun, easy energy.

Joe kept texting me all night asking what we were doing, then showed up at Rails… but thankfully didn’t stick around.

Sometimes the universe helps.

Saturday – Beach Drinks, Woody’s & Midnight Traditions
Worked, went home early, took a nap.

Skipped the market because I was too tired, but later ran into the Israeli guys again, and somehow that turned into a night out.

We started with drinks on the beach with random hostel people, then went to Woody’s.

Skipped the line because I really had to pee. Priorities.

Danced a bit with Ella, felt normal again, no weird tension.

Johav (one of the Israeli guys) tried to kiss me multiple times… but no. Just friends. He was sweet though.

Stayed out until around 3AM, then made the most important stop of the night:

The pie shop.

At this point, it’s basically a tradition.

Romance

This week was… confusing.

Not really romance, more like navigating attention, expectations, and my own boundaries.

This one girl clearly wanted something more.
Johav tried.
Joe hovered somewhere in the background.

And me?

Just trying to keep things light without hurting people.

Still figuring that one out.

Tips & Tricks

Cleaning jobs = easy extra cash if you can find them
Always carry water when biking in Byron (learn from my tomato moment)
Be clear with people before things get complicated
Nights out are fun, but boundaries matter
Late-night food stops? Essential. Always.

Spots this week:

Casa Luna → really fun, Spanish vibe, but very busy
Woody’s → okay, but a bit too “basic club” energy
Rails → loved it, more local vibe and just better atmosphere overall

Reflection

This week felt like a lesson in balance.

Between fun and responsibility.
Between connection and confusion.
Between saying yes… and knowing when to step back.

I’m starting to realise that traveling isn’t just about places, it’s about people. And sometimes, that’s the messiest part.

But also the most meaningful.

And somehow, even in the awkward moments, the sunburns, the missed plans, and the midnight pies… I still wouldn’t trade it.

Wherever I am next, I’m learning that even chaos can feel like a beginning.
