Surf, Soft Nights & Chaotic Kisses in Byron Bay (Aus part 15)

Introduction

Byron Bay keeps pulling me in deeper.

What started as a few beach days and random nights out is slowly turning into something that feels like actual life—work shifts, routines, familiar faces… and still just enough chaos to keep things interesting.

This week had everything: cozy dinners that felt like home, the most random (and iconic) staff party ever, nights that went completely off track, moments of doubt, and little reminders of why I’m exactly where I’m supposed to be.

Main Adventure

Monday – Cleaning & A Cozy Night In
Started the week working—cleaning at Claire’s. Not the most exciting job, but honestly… it feels good to have some structure (and money).

In the evening, Marnie invited Ella, Mara, and me over to the house she’s currently staying in. She’s living there while her friend, someone she met on a previous trip, is in Melbourne. Backpacker logic at its finest.

We made tacos, nachos, and homemade cookies (which were insanely good).

Sat together, watched Someone Great, talked, laughed… and just enjoyed one of those rare, calm evenings.

It felt warm. Easy. Almost like home.

Didn’t get back until around 1am—so much for an early night.

Tuesday – The Most Random Staff Party Ever
Woke up around 9am, completely exhausted, but Byron was doing its thing again. Blue skies, warm air… impossible to stay in bed.

Met up with Ingrid and headed to Secret Garden for the Treehouse staff party.

Quick stop at a café for a pain au chocolat (essential), and Ingrid said hi to a friend. Nothing unusual, yet.

Until we arrived.

There was a bus waiting.

Within minutes, we were on our way to Seven Mile Beach… for a surf lesson.

A staff party. With surfing.

Still not over that.

The lesson was actually amazing—I had so much fun. Ingrid went for the green waves, which looked a bit too intense for me, so I stayed safe-ish.

After surfing, things somehow got even better.

They pulled out volleyball poles and a net from the car, set everything up on the beach, and we started playing.
My team absolutely crushed it.

First beers were opened. Sun shining. Sand everywhere.
One of those moments where you just think: yeah… this is it.

We had food, jumped into the back of a 4×4 (as you do), and made our way back.

Tuesday Night – From Sunset Drinks to Total Chaos
Back at Secret Garden, Ingrid and I quickly walked to the hostel to shower and change. I borrowed her green top, very important detail.

When we got back, the whole place was rented just for us.
There was a Moroccan food truck serving the most unreal kebabs and fries.

Also: unlimited beer. Dangerous combination.

Started the evening chill, sitting with the girls, but they went home pretty early, and I ended up joining the rest of the group.

At some point, everything shut down and one of the guys from work suggested going to Rails, because he’d buy beer.

So… obviously we went.

Talked a lot with Lucas there, and then plans shifted (again), and we ended up going to Arts Factory.

Lucas grabbed a bottle of wine… which I definitely helped finish.

At one point, he literally sat in Ingrid’s bike basket while she cycled us there. I don’t even question things anymore.

At Arts, Ingrid disappeared (later found out she was with the surf instructor—honestly iconic).

Meanwhile, I was stuck with two guys from work who only cared about where Ingrid was. I was clearly just… the side character in that moment.

Thankfully, Mara, Ella, and Marnie showed up and I could escape back to them.

And then—Josh.

The cute guy from my hostel room… who had now moved to Arts Factory.

I wish I could say I played it cool.

I did not.

I asked him—completely seriously—if he wanted to be my boyfriend because he has a van.

He said yes… but only if I kissed him.

I said no.

Walked away.

…then later found him again in the hallway and kissed him anyway.

It was quick, chaotic, and weirdly exciting.

After that, things blurred a bit. Saw his van, nearly fell asleep there, and somehow ended up biking back to the hostel in the rain.

Byron nights never just end normally.

Wednesday – Plans, Beach & The Heat
Slept in until 11 (finally, a proper rest) because I had the day off.

Went to Happy Travels to book my Greyhound bus—felt strange actually committing to leaving at some point.

Stopped by Aldi (still not over the fact that there’s an Aldi here), grabbed some groceries, and headed to the beach.

It was so hot.

Mara joined after work, and we just laid there for a while, doing nothing.

Later, I decided to cook gnocchi… only to realize I forgot the sauce.

So yes—back to the store I went.

In the evening, we went to Secret Garden again because Marnie is leaving soon 🙁

Also some random work drama with Ingrid’s shifts—but honestly, that’s just daily life here at this point.

Thursday – Wine Nights & Not-So-Special Vibes
Another beach day, then got ready and headed to Secret Garden early for free entry.

Bought a bottle of wine, then went to Aquarius to hang with Ella, Marnie, and some friends.

It was nice… but not amazing.

One of those nights that’s just a bit meh.

Texted Josh to see what he was doing—he replied the next day. Timing is clearly his strong suit.

Friday – Work, Feeling Off & Finding People Again
Double shift. Exhausting.

But working with Ingrid makes everything lighter—we even slowed down on purpose just to get more hours (= more money).

After work, I felt a bit off.

We met a girl who somehow had more friends in one evening than we had in two weeks. Slight reality check.

At some point, I just told another girl I felt a bit sad and asked if I could sit with her.

And she was so kind.

Suddenly I was sitting with a whole group, including four Dutch girls, just talking and laughing like I’d known them longer.

We went to a pub together, but I was tired, hadn’t been drinking, and wasn’t fully in the mood—so I left early.

And honestly, that felt like the right choice.

Saterday – Campfire Over Clubbing
Worked again, then there was a birthday at the hostel—so people started drinking.

Mara and I joined for a bit, but she ended up going out with Katie.

I didn’t feel like going.

So instead, I joined a random campfire on the beach.

And that turned out to be exactly what I needed.

Ingrid came by later, then Mara and Katie too.
We just sat there, talking, staring at the fire, listening to the waves.

Simple. Real. Calm.

(Texted Josh again. No reply. Love that.)

Sunday – Surfing & Feeling Alive Again
Worked a short shift, then went surfing with Mara and Ingrid using Ingrid’s board.

And I loved it.

Like, really loved it.

There’s something about being in the ocean, catching waves, falling, trying again—it just clears your head completely.

Definitely something I want to keep doing.

Tomorrow it’s back to cleaning at Claire’s and working at Treehouse.

Tiring… but worth it.

Romance / Encounters

This week was… confusing.

Josh is fun, unpredictable, slightly chaotic—and not exactly reliable.

But that one kiss? Still worth it.

Also noticed one of Ingrid’s friends looking at me a lot… and he’s actually really cute.

So who knows what next week will bring.

Tips & Tricks

  • Say yes to things that sound random (like a “staff party” that turns into surfing)
  • Not every night out has to be amazing—don’t force it
  • If you feel off, talk to someone—people surprise you
  • Beach days fix more than you think
  • Campfires hit different after chaotic nights

Reflection

This week felt like a mix of everything.

Chaos and calm. Connection and confusion.
Nights that felt electric, and others that felt a bit empty.

But that’s kind of what this trip is teaching me.

Not every moment has to be perfect.

Sometimes it’s the weird nights, the small conversations, the unexpected kisses, the quiet beach moments… that stay with you the most.

And maybe I don’t need to have it all figured out yet.

Maybe just being here—fully in it—is enough.

Wherever I am next, I’m learning that even chaos can feel like a beginning.
