Work, Wild Nights & Doubts in Byron Bay (Aus part 13)

Introduction

Byron Bay was starting to feel a little more real. Less like a holiday, more like actual life. Work shifts, routines, new people constantly coming in and out… and somewhere in between, trying to figure out what I actually want from this whole trip.

This week had everything, free food, bad decisions, unexpected bookings, wild nights, homesickness… and moments that made it all worth it again.

Main Adventure

Monday – Work, Small Wins & Big Plans
Woke up around 10, had breakfast, and Mara did my hair before dropping me off at work (honestly, what would I do without her).

At work, Juan already asked if I could do some evening shifts too, music to my ears (and my bank account). Took a couple of painkillers, but overall, I felt okay.

Best part? Free fries and a burger at work. Backpacker luxury.

Tried to meet Mara after, but somehow missed her and ended up taking the WakeUp bus into town instead. Classic miscommunication.

Back at the hostel: nap, pool, terrace, journaling… and scrolling through travel plans. Found a 20-day East Coast trip deal for $1600 AUD, honestly very tempting. Also started dreaming about Uluru and the West Coast.

For once, it felt like life was actually going my way.

Tuesday – Work, Plans & Technology Fails
Quick chat with the Happy Travels guy in the morning, told him I’d come back after work.

Work itself was chill. The Italian chef is super kind and always helps me out when I need it.

Tried to join a Teams meeting for a catering job later… but of course, my WiFi decided to betray me. Had to reschedule.

Nap, dinner, sleep. One of those simple days.

Wednesday – Spontaneous Decisions & Regret
Another workday, pretty calm. Even helped out a bit in the kitchen.

After work, I went to Happy Travels at WakeUp hostel (less busy there). I just wanted information about that East Coast deal…

And somehow walked out having paid $1500 AUD.

For Fraser Island, Whitsundays, and the Great Barrier Reef.

Not exactly the plan.

The guy was so pushy, and I didn’t really have time to think. I even told him I’d come back the next day… but nope. Suddenly it was booked.

Spent the rest of the evening feeling a bit off about it. Not regret exactly, but definitely overwhelmed.

Thursday – Double Shift & Unexpected Fun
Double shift day.

Between shifts, I took a nap, interrupted by loud English guys (of course).

Evening shift was with Ingrid, a French girl, and honestly… we had so much fun. Those random work connections really make everything better.

Got free pizza again and ate it with Mara back at the hostel.

Tired, but content.

Friday – Wild Night & Memory Gaps
Worked during the day, then decided to go out.

We started with drinks on the terrace, me, Mara, Marnie, Ella (our roommate), and McKenzie. Then headed to Woody’s.

Apparently, it was a great night.

I say “apparently” because… I don’t remember that much.

What I do remember:

  • kissing Mara (multiple times??)
  • and somehow also kissing Ella

Oops.

Saturday – Hangover & Homesickness
Woke up feeling absolutely terrible.

Was supposed to work from 11 to 3:30, but I felt so bad I asked to go home. Slept it off, then ran into Ella later, thankfully, everything was normal. Crisis avoided.

Spent the rest of the day at the beach, just chilling.

But mentally… something shifted.

Homesickness hit. Hard.

Started questioning everything, do I really want to do the whole East Coast? The West Coast? It suddenly felt exhausting instead of exciting.

Ingrid mentioned she might do the West Coast too, which made it feel a bit less overwhelming. Maybe doing it together could change things.

Still… one of those heavy thinking days.

Sunday – New People, Ti Tree Lake & A Soft Ending
Woke up around 10, slow morning chatting with Ella.

Then the world got small again in the weirdest way.

Mara told me she met a German guy called Jan, super polite. I immediately knew: it had to be the same Jan I met in Port Macquarie.

And it was.

We invited him to join us to Ti Tree Lake, along with Ella and Marnie. Had a quick BBQ at the hostel before leaving.

New roommate Jack invited himself too… even though we didn’t have space in the car. Bold move.

After a short walk, we reached the lake. At first, it looked a bit underwhelming, dark, almost muddy water.

But once we got in… it was actually amazing.

The color comes from tea tree oil, which makes it look weird but feel so soft. We swam across, reached a quiet little beach, and suddenly… it felt like one of those perfect travel moments again.

Tomorrow, I’m checking out of Aquarius.

Again.

Romance / Encounters

This week wasn’t really about romance… but definitely about people.

From Ingrid at work, to random nights out, to reconnecting with Jan in the most unexpected way, Byron Bay keeps throwing the right people into my path at the weirdest times.

Even if it’s just for a moment.

Tips & Tricks

  • Free meals at work = save money wherever you can
  • Be careful with travel agencies, take your time before booking anything
  • Always say yes to spontaneous trips (like Ti Tree Lake)
  • Homesickness is normal, don’t ignore it, just ride it out
  • The best days are usually unplanned

Reflection

This week felt different.

Less chaotic partying, more real life. Work, doubts, decisions, overthinking… but also connection, laughter, and those small perfect moments that remind me why I’m here.

Not every week has to be wild to be meaningful.

Sometimes it’s the confusion, the homesickness, the unexpected choices… that shape the journey the most.

Wherever I am next, I’m learning that even chaos can feel like a beginning.
