New Beginnings & Waterfalls in Byron Bay (Aus part 12)

Introduction

Leaving Arts Factory felt… weird. Familiar chaos behind, and a new chapter ahead. I didn’t know exactly what awaited me at Aquarius Backpackers, but Byron Bay has never let me down in delivering surprises.

Main Adventure

Monday – Moving, New Friends & Free Meals
Checked out of Arts Factory in the morning. Spent a lazy few hours just chilling until 1 pm, then headed to Aquarius. On the way, we spotted a girl struggling with her suitcase, naturally, we gave her a lift. Turns out, she was heading to Aquarius too. Immediate new friend. Love those moments.

Aquarius itself… well, the receptionists are kind of rude, but whatever. The hostel has this weird motel vibe, each room with its own bathroom and balcony, which makes meeting people a bit tricky. Still, we got through the day, sent a few messages asking if anyone needed kitchen hands, and ended the evening with the free meal.

Every night there is free dinner in the hostel, everyone at dinner looked super chic; I felt a bit out of place, but the food was amazing. A good start to this new base, even if low-key

Tuesday – Minyon Falls & Unexpected Beach Vibes
Mara went to work early, and when she got back, she, Giulio (from Arts Factory) and I decided to explore Minyon Falls. Three hours of walking later… WOW. Swimming under the waterfalls was breathtaking, and honestly, a little terrifying. Bonus points: we spotted a giant Australian spider, and Mara ended up with not one, but two leeches on her toes. Classic Australia.

Afterwards, we walked along the beach, stumbled into a free concert with pancakes (yes, free), grabbed a quick meal, and returned to the beach. A guy was playing guitar, so naturally, we sat down, joined the vibe, and soon got invited by a few guys from our previous hostel. Turns out, four girls from Flanders were there too! Chilled, drank a bit, and eventually ended up at the piano bar. First, we couldn’t get in… then, magically, we did. Super fun night, sober or not.

Wednesday – Hope, Surfing & Piano Bar Addictions
Morning beach vibes, still no job news. Then, suddenly: a chef from a restaurant reached out, dishwashing opportunity! Hell yeah. Mara also had an interview with Elements of Byron, if she gets it, perfect timing.

Afternoon surfing session, then back to piano bar (slight addiction forming). Nothing major happened, except a random guy told me I look like Madison Beer. Funny enough, I hear that a lot.

Thursday – Trial Shift & Small Wins
Trial shift at Treehouse Byron Bay next to WakeUp! hostel. Location is gorgeous, team is fun. The head chef is definitely easy on the eyes (mid-30s, sigh). I got the hang of things, though he told me to speed up a bit.

Meanwhile, spotted a free bike in Ballina; Mara and I went to pick it up. Now, 5-minute bike ride to work. Small travel hack victory.

Evening chill: Outer Banks and low-key hostel vibes. Mara got the job at Elements of Byron, celebratory Ballina shopping and MacDo stop included.

Friday – Cleaning Job & Beach Time
Woke up with a sore throat but had a cleaning job lined up. Ignored it at first… nine messages later, I went. Felt awful initially, but once there, it was easy, just vacuuming. Worked with a super chill 28-year-old Argentine guy. Small effort, big relief.

Mara went surfing with our new friend from Monday, so I joined them and her friends on the beach. Sun, waves, people, perfect recovery day. Might go out later, depending on how I feel.

Saturday – Quiet Night & Card Games
Didn’t feel like going out, honestly, not wauw. Spent the evening playing cards with Marnie and Josh, a random guy from our room. Watched another episode of Outer Banks and went to bed early. Low-key, but exactly what I needed.

Sunday – Sun, Sick Moments & Kindness
Morning sunbathing with Mara, then headed to Claire’s for a bit of cleaning. One hour in… felt awful. Sick, weak, almost crying. Still pushed through for a little while, but eventually called Mara. She came to pick me up, we packed my bike in the car, and I finally rested.

Evening recovery included a hostel BBQ Mara had arranged for me, more Outer Banks, and early sleep. Small gestures, small victories, but they mattered.

Tips & Tricks

  • Aquarius Backpackers: Free dinner every night. Motel-style rooms = less social, but perfect for privacy.
  • Minyon Falls: Wear sturdy shoes, watch out for leeches, and bring swimwear for waterfall swims.
  • Free activities in Byron Bay: random concerts, pancake giveaways, beach jams. Keep your eyes open!
  • Travel wins: free books, free bikes, spontaneous rideshares… always look around.
  • Sick days happen. Rest, hydrate, and let friends help, no shame in slowing down.

Reflection

This week felt like a mix of adventure and slow recovery. Moving hostels, discovering hidden waterfalls, spontaneous beach concerts, surfing, trial shifts, and quiet nights… even sick moments have their place.

Byron Bay keeps teaching me that every kind of day, fast, chaotic, or slow and tired, adds to the story.

Wherever I am next, I’m learning that even chaos can feel like a beginning.
