Best Coffee Spots in Hasselt

If you’re mainly looking for a good coffee, these are some places I’d consider.

Shanti Beans

If you’re serious about coffee, Shanti Beans is one of the places I’d put on your list in Hasselt.

This small espresso bar in the heart of the city focuses on freshly roasted coffee, with everything from espresso and cortado to cappuccino and flat white. They also have chai and matcha lattes, plus a few more unusual coffee creations such as a cardamom-and-ginger cappuccino.

But what makes Shanti Beans more than just another coffee stop is the atmosphere. The owners describe it as a place where you come for the coffee but stay for the music, drinks and terrace. They also organise Shanti Beats, with coffee, drinks and ambient music on the first Sunday of the month.

So if you’re walking around Hasselt’s centre and want a coffee somewhere with a bit more personality, this would be one of my picks.

I’d choose Shanti Beans if: you want good coffee, a lively atmosphere and a café with its own personality.

Fietsbar

Fietsbar is probably the most unusual coffee stop on this list because, yes, it is literally a bike shop, bicycle repair shop and café all in one.

You can come here to get your bike repaired or look at bicycles, but you can also simply walk in for a coffee. They serve coffee, bio-lemonade and beer, and there is also a small food offering with breakfast, homemade cake and healthy lunch options.

That makes Fietsbar particularly interesting if you’re exploring Hasselt by bike. You can stop for breakfast, have your bike looked at if necessary, or simply take a break before continuing your ride.

It’s also close to the centre, so you don’t actually need to be a cyclist to enjoy it.

I’d choose Fietsbar if: you want coffee and food in a cycling-themed setting, especially if you’re exploring Hasselt by bike.

King Kong Coffee

If your priority is coffee rather than food, King Kong Coffee is one of the more interesting options in Hasselt.

You’ll find it on Maastrichterstraat, right in the city centre, and the coffee comes mainly from Caffènation, the Antwerp specialty coffee roaster. The café has a laid-back atmosphere with music playing in the background, giving it a little more character than your average coffee chain.

They serve different coffee styles including espresso, filter coffee, cold brew and nitro coffee, with plant-based milk also available.

Its location also makes it an easy stop during a shopping afternoon: grab a coffee, sit down for a bit and then continue exploring Hasselt’s shopping streets.

I’d choose King Kong if: you’re looking for specialty coffee in a casual, slightly alternative atmosphere.

Best Breakfast & Brunch Spots in Hasselt

If you’re looking for somewhere to actually sit down and have breakfast or brunch, these are the places I’d put on your list.

Marloo’s

Marloo’s is probably the place I’d choose if you want a proper breakfast or brunch in Hasselt rather than simply coffee and cake.

Their breakfast menu goes well beyond the standard croissant-and-coffee combination. Depending on what you’re in the mood for, you can go for French toast, pancakes, a breakfast burger, yo-granola, Turkish eggs or a salmon bagel.

They also have a proper lunch and brunch menu, with dishes changing over time. Recent examples include Dan Dan noodles and an Asian salad with homemade peanut sauce, so the food has more of an international influence than a traditional Belgian lunch café.

The interior is another reason to come here. Marloo’s describes itself as a relaxed, slightly moody place where the atmosphere is just as important as the food.

It’s also located on Minderbroedersstraat, making it easy to combine with exploring the centre of Hasselt.

I’d choose Marloo’s if: you want a proper breakfast or brunch with plenty of savoury and sweet choices.

Tarte Tatin

If you’re more interested in cake, pastries and a cosy afternoon coffee than a huge brunch, Tarte Tatin is the one I’d choose.

This little cake house is located behind Hasselt’s town hall and is designed to feel more like someone’s grandmother’s living room than a modern brunch bar. The focus is on homemade cakes, pies and cookies, alongside coffee and loose-leaf tea.

You can also come here for breakfast, brunch or lunch, but honestly, I think the sweet side is what makes Tarte Tatin particularly worth remembering.

They serve things such as homemade cakes and pies, and you can also order their desserts and baked treats to take away. Their coffee menu includes classics such as cappuccino and latte macchiato, as well as more Belgian options such as Hasseltse koffie.

So this is the place I’d save for when you want to slow down for an hour rather than quickly refuel between attractions.

I’d choose Tarte Tatin if: you want homemade cake, pastries and a cosy old-fashioned atmosphere.
