Wondering about the best time to visit Belgium? As a Belgian myself, I’d say there’s no single perfect answer, it really depends on what you want to experience.
Belgium isn’t exactly famous for perfect weather. Think London, but slightly more forgiving. 🇧🇪 You can get sunshine one day and rain the next, pretty much regardless of the season.
That said, having lived here and travelled around Belgium, there are definitely some times of year I’d choose over others.
My personal favourite? Summer. Sorry, I said what I said.
Belgium is simply at its best when the sun is out, terraces are full, festivals are happening and everyone suddenly seems 10 times happier.
But don’t write off the other seasons just yet. Spring brings warmer days and outdoor events, winter turns Belgian cities into cosy Christmas destinations, and September has its own unique energy.
So, when is the best time to visit Belgium? Let’s break it down.
If you’re still planning your trip, my complete Belgium Travel Guide covers the best cities, food, festivals, transport and local tips.
1. Summer: My Favourite Time to Visit Belgium
June to August
Sorry, but summer is number one for me.
Yes, Belgium can get rainy summers. Yes, we don’t have guaranteed sunshine. But when the weather is good, Belgium is honestly such a fun place to be.
Everyone comes outside.
Terraces are packed, parks are full, outdoor bars open up and there seem to be festivals happening everywhere.
If festivals are one of your main reasons for visiting Belgium, check out my Belgium Festivals Guide for the biggest festivals, from Tomorrowland and Rock Werchter to smaller local festivals.
Summer is also the best time for:
- Belgian festivals
- Outdoor concerts
- Beer gardens and terraces
- Day trips
- Exploring Belgian cities
- Coastal trips
- Long evenings outside
- Summer events
And I swear, everyone is just happier when the sun comes out.
The weather is usually pleasantly warm rather than unbearably hot, although Belgium can definitely have the occasional heatwave.
If you want to experience Belgium when it feels the most alive, I’d choose summer without hesitation.

I created a Google Map with 540+ saved places from my years living and travelling around Belgium, including towns, things to do, cafés, nightlife, restaurants, shopping and hidden gems.
2. May: Warm Weather Without Full Summer
May
May is probably my second favourite month to visit Belgium.
The weather is starting to get properly warm, people are coming back outside and you can finally spend afternoons sitting on terraces without freezing.
There are also plenty of pop-up festivals, events and activities starting around this time.
The best part?
It still doesn’t quite have the full summer holiday feeling, so cities can feel a little less hectic.
May is a great choice if you want:
- Warmer weather
- Outdoor activities
- Terraces and cafés
- Spring flowers
- Local events
- Longer days
- A lively atmosphere without peak summer
It’s one of those months where Belgium starts feeling like Belgium in its best mood.

3. Winter: Christmas Markets & Cosy Belgium
December
Winter definitely isn’t the best time if you’re coming to Belgium for sunshine.
It can be cold, grey and rainy, so bring a proper jacket.
But December is a completely different story.
Belgian cities become incredibly cosy during the Christmas season, with Christmas markets, lights, food stalls, hot drinks and festive decorations.
Some of my favourite places to visit during this time include:
- Brussels -> check out my Brussels Travel Guide
- Ghent -> check out my Ghent Travel Guide
- Bruges -> check out my Bruges Travel Guide
- Hasselt -> check out my Hasselt Travel Guide
- Leuven -> check out my Leuven Travel Guide
Walking around a Belgian city with Christmas lights everywhere, grabbing something warm to drink and stopping at food stalls is honestly such a nice experience.
If you don’t mind the cold, December is one of the most atmospheric times to visit Belgium.
Just don’t expect beach weather.

4. September: Warm Weather & Student Season
September
September is a little underrated.
You can often still get really good weather, especially at the beginning of the month, but temperatures are usually more comfortable than during a summer heatwave.
And then there is another reason I love September:
the students come back.
Belgian university cities like Leuven and Ghent suddenly become incredibly lively again when the academic year starts.
Bars fill up, student events start again and there is a completely different energy around the cities.
It’s especially fun if you’re interested in experiencing the student atmosphere in Belgium.
September is a great choice if you want:
- Pleasant weather
- Fewer extreme summer temperatures
- Lively cities
- Student nightlife
- Events and activities
- Outdoor terraces
It can be busy, but in a completely different way from peak tourist season.

So, When Should You Visit Belgium?
Honestly, it depends on what you want to do.
For the best overall experience: Summer
Festivals, sunshine, terraces, outdoor events and everyone being outside.
My personal winner.
For nice weather without full summer: May
Warm weather is starting, lots of things are happening and Belgium feels alive again.
For Christmas markets: December
Cold? Yes.
Worth it? Absolutely.
For student life & comfortable weather: September
Especially good for Leuven and Ghent when universities start again.

Belgium Weather: What Should You Expect?
One thing to know before visiting Belgium is that the weather can be unpredictable.
Even during summer, you can get rain. And even during spring or autumn, you can randomly get a beautiful sunny day.
So don’t plan your entire trip around guaranteed sunshine.
Instead, check the forecast shortly before you leave and always pack a light rain jacket.
Belgium is small enough that you can also easily combine indoor and outdoor activities. Spend the morning exploring a museum or historic centre, sit on a terrace when the sun comes out and finish the day with Belgian beer or fries.
That’s basically the Belgian way. 🇧🇪
Final Thoughts
There isn’t one objectively best time to visit Belgium.
But if you ask me personally, I’d go in summer.
Belgium just feels different when the weather is good. Festivals are everywhere, terraces are full, people stay outside until late and suddenly everyone seems ridiculously happy just because there is some sunshine.
May comes a very close second, while December is perfect if you want cosy Christmas markets.
And if you’re interested in Belgian student cities, September is definitely worth considering.
So really, the best month to visit Belgium depends on what kind of trip you’re looking for.

FAQ: Best Time to Visit Belgium
What is the best time to visit Belgium?
The best time to visit Belgium is generally May to September, when the weather is milder and there are more outdoor activities, festivals and events. Personally, I prefer summer, especially June to August, because Belgian cities feel much more lively when the sun is out.
What is the best month to visit Belgium?
For me, July is one of the best months to visit Belgium if you want warm weather, festivals, outdoor terraces and long evenings. May and September are also great options if you prefer slightly milder temperatures and fewer peak-summer crowds.
Is summer a good time to visit Belgium?
Absolutely. Summer is my favourite time to visit Belgium. From June to August, you can enjoy festivals, outdoor concerts, terraces, day trips and Belgian coastal towns. The main downside is that Belgian summer weather can still be unpredictable, so don’t forget a rain jacket.
Is May a good time to visit Belgium?
Yes. May is one of my favourite months in Belgium. The weather is starting to get warmer, flowers are blooming and outdoor events and terraces are becoming more popular. It’s a great compromise if you want a lively Belgium without visiting during the busiest part of summer.
Is September a good time to visit Belgium?
Yes, especially if you want to experience Belgian student life. Universities in cities like Leuven and Ghent start up again around September, bringing the cities back to life. The weather can also still be pleasantly warm, particularly at the beginning of the month.
Is December a good time to visit Belgium?
December is a great time to visit if you enjoy Christmas markets and cosy winter atmospheres. Cities such as Brussels, Bruges, Ghent, Leuven and Hasselt become filled with Christmas lights, markets and festive activities. Just expect cold and potentially rainy weather.
Does it rain a lot in Belgium?
Yes, rain is possible throughout the year in Belgium. Even summer isn’t guaranteed to be dry. The weather can change quickly, so I’d recommend bringing a light rain jacket or umbrella regardless of when you visit.
What is the weather like in Belgium in summer?
Belgian summers are generally mild to warm, but the weather can be unpredictable. You can have beautiful sunny days followed by rain, and occasional heatwaves can make temperatures much higher. I’d prepare for both sunshine and rain.
What is the worst time to visit Belgium?
There isn’t necessarily a “bad” time to visit Belgium, but January and February can be less appealing if you don’t enjoy cold, grey and rainy weather. However, winter can still be a good time for museums, food, beer and cosy city trips.
How many days do you need in Belgium?
I’d recommend at least 4–5 days for a first trip to Belgium, although you could easily spend a week or more exploring different cities and regions. Belgium is small, so it’s possible to combine destinations such as Brussels, Bruges, Ghent, Antwerp and Leuven relatively easily.
What should I pack for Belgium?
Because Belgian weather is unpredictable, layers and rain protection are essential. I’d always bring a light rain jacket or umbrella, even in summer. Your exact packing list will depend on the season, but comfortable shoes are also important because Belgium’s historic city centres are best explored on foot.
