Airlie Beach is much more than just the gateway to the Whitsunday Islands.
While most travellers come here for a sailing trip, there are actually plenty of incredible day trips waiting just outside town. From tropical islands and waterfalls to rainforest lookouts and beaches filled with kangaroos, Airlie Beach is the perfect base for exploring this part of Queensland.
After spending a few days here during my East Coast Australia backpacking trip, these are the day trips I’d recommend the most.
This is a shorter guide focused specifically on the best day trips from Airlie Beach. If you’re looking for a complete guide covering where to stay, the best cafés and restaurants, nightlife, transport, backpacker tips, and everything else you need to know before visiting, make sure to check out my full Airlie Beach Travel Guide.
1. Whitsunday Islands
Without question, this is the number one day trip from Airlie Beach.
Whether you choose a one-day cruise or a multi-day sailing trip like I did, visiting the Whitsundays is something you simply shouldn’t skip.
Highlights include:
- Whitehaven Beach
- Hill Inlet Lookout
- Snorkelling on the Great Barrier Reef
- Sailing through turquoise water
- Watching incredible sunsets from the boat
For me, this was one of the absolute highlights of my entire Australia trip.
If you’re deciding between a day cruise and an overnight sailing trip, I’d personally choose the overnight experience every time.

2. Hamilton Island
If you’re looking for beautiful beaches, luxury resorts and relaxed island vibes, Hamilton Island makes a fantastic day trip.
Spend the day exploring the marina, relaxing on Catseye Beach, renting a golf buggy or hiking to one of the island’s scenic lookouts.
Regular ferries depart from Airlie Beach, making it easy to visit without staying overnight.
3. Daydream Island
For a quieter island escape, Daydream Island is another excellent choice.
It’s smaller than Hamilton Island but offers beautiful beaches, walking paths and the Living Reef aquarium, where you can learn more about the marine life of the Great Barrier Reef.
It’s perfect if you’re looking for a slower, more relaxing day.
4. Cape Hillsborough
Cape Hillsborough is one of the most unique sunrise experiences in Australia.
Early in the morning, wild kangaroos and wallabies regularly gather on the beach while the sun rises behind them.
It’s around a two-hour drive from Airlie Beach, so you’ll need a rental car or organised tour, but it’s definitely one of the most memorable day trips in the region.
5. Conway Conservation Park
If you’re looking for nature without spending any money, Conway Conservation Park is a fantastic option.
The park is filled with rainforest walking trails, scenic lookouts and peaceful picnic spots overlooking the Whitsunday coastline.
One of the best times to visit is late afternoon when the sun starts setting over the surrounding hills.
It’s a great alternative if you’ve already spent a few days on the water and want to experience a different side of the region.
6. Cedar Creek Falls
If you have access to a car, Cedar Creek Falls is one of the easiest and most rewarding day trips from Airlie Beach.
Surrounded by rainforest, this peaceful waterfall has a natural swimming hole that’s perfect for cooling off after a hot Queensland day.
Fair warning though…
The water is freezing.
But after a few seconds, it’s absolutely worth jumping in.

7. Scenic Flight Over the Great Barrier Reef
Although I didn’t do this myself because it was outside my budget, almost everyone I met who booked a scenic flight said it became one of the highlights of their Australia trip.
Flying above the Whitsunday Islands, Whitehaven Beach and the famous Heart Reef gives you a completely different perspective than seeing everything from the water.
If it’s within your budget, this is one of those once-in-a-lifetime experiences many travellers never forget.
Which Day Trip Should You Choose?
If you only have one extra day in Airlie Beach, choose the Whitsunday Islands.
If you have two or three days, I’d combine the Whitsundays with Cedar Creek Falls or Hamilton Island.
Travelling with a rental car?
Then definitely add Cape Hillsborough or Conway Conservation Park to your itinerary.
Final Thoughts
One of the reasons I loved Airlie Beach so much is that there are so many different ways to explore the surrounding area.
Whether you want tropical islands, waterfalls, rainforest walks or unforgettable wildlife experiences, you’ll find something that suits your travel style.
For me, the Whitsundays will always be the standout experience.
But honestly…
Even the quieter places, like Cedar Creek Falls and Conway Conservation Park, became some of my favourite memories simply because they offered a completely different side of Queensland.
