Turquoise water, island sunsets, beach days and two very different sides of island life.
Indonesia was one of those places where I never really knew what the next few days would look like. After spending time exploring Bali and Nusa Lembongan, I continued to the Gili Islands, where I experienced two completely different atmospheres within just a few days.
I spent two nights on Gili Trawangan, the most social and party-focused of the three Gili Islands, before heading to Gili Air for a much more relaxed island experience. From beach days and cycling around the island to sunset boat trips, meeting other backpackers and enjoying a few days of doing absolutely nothing, the Gili Islands became a memorable part of my Indonesia trip.
If I’m being honest, Gili T wasn’t entirely my vibe, but I absolutely loved the slower pace of Gili Air. And that contrast is exactly why I think it’s worth choosing the right island for your travel style.
In this Lombok and Gili Islands travel guide, you’ll find my personal experiences, practical travel inspiration and honest recommendations for exploring this part of Indonesia.
Gili Islands Travel Guides
Although I haven’t explored mainland Lombok myself, I did visit Gili Trawangan and Gili Air, two of the islands just off Lombok’s northwest coast. They might be close to each other geographically, but the atmosphere can feel completely different.
Whether you’re looking for social hostels and nightlife, beautiful beaches, relaxed island life or somewhere to slow down for a few days, here’s what I experienced on the Gili Islands.

What Made the Gili Islands Special?
For me, one of the best things about the Gili Islands was how different the experience felt from one island to the next.
Gili Trawangan was social, busy and very focused on nightlife. I enjoyed parts of that experience, especially meeting people and spending time by the beach, but I realised that a constant party atmosphere isn’t necessarily what I look for when travelling.
Gili Air was much more my kind of place. Renting a bicycle and exploring without a strict plan, finding a quiet beach and watching the sunset from a boat were the kinds of simple experiences I loved most.
I also liked that I could spend time with other travellers while still enjoying a few moments by myself. After travelling around Indonesia for about a month, it was nice to have a couple of days where I could slow down and do my own thing.
And honestly, I think that’s part of what makes travelling around Indonesia so interesting. Even destinations that are relatively close together can offer completely different experiences.
Explore Bali
The Gili Islands were just one part of my Indonesia adventure. I also spent time exploring Bali, from the dramatic cliffs and sunset spots of Uluwatu to the busy streets and café culture of Canggu. I visited Nusa Penida, hiked Mount Batur for sunrise and experienced the social, sometimes chaotic and often wonderfully spontaneous side of backpacking through Indonesia.
Final Note
If I had to choose between the two islands I visited, I’d go back to Gili Air.
Gili Trawangan was beautiful, and I can understand why so many backpackers love its social scene. But for me, the quieter atmosphere, cycling around the island and watching the sunset on Gili Air made it the more memorable stop.
Of course, this is based on my own experience, and everyone travels differently. If you love meeting people and going out, you might feel completely at home on Gili T. If you’re more interested in relaxed island days and slower evenings, Gili Air might suit you better.
And if you’re planning to explore mainland Lombok as well, keep in mind that I haven’t visited that part of the island myself, so my recommendations here focus on the Gili Islands.
Wherever you decide to go, leave a little room for spontaneous plans, unexpected friendships and those simple island moments that end up becoming your favourite memories.
