10 Things to Do in Tenerife

Tenerife is one of those islands that just steals your heart — from volcanic landscapes to hidden beaches, stunning sunsets, and, of course, amazing food. I’ve spent some time exploring this incredible island, and I have to say, there’s so much to see and do that you could easily spend weeks here without getting bored. From hiking volcanic peaks to discovering hidden swimming spots, sipping cocktails at sunset, and indulging in tapas, Tenerife has something for everyone. Here are my top 10 things to do on this beautiful island.

1. Visit Mount Teide

No trip to Tenerife is complete without visiting Mount Teide, Spain’s highest peak. This iconic volcano is a must-see, offering stunning panoramic views of the island that you won’t find anywhere else.

The parking areas can be quite far from the main viewpoints, so be prepared for a longer walk before you even start exploring. During the day it can get warm, so don’t dress too heavily. Comfortable hiking shoes, sunscreen, a hat, and enough water are essential.

If you feel up for it, the walk towards the summit is absolutely worth it — the views truly make you feel like you’re on top of the world. Even taking the cable car partway already gives you breathtaking views of the crater and the dramatic volcanic landscapes surrounding Teide.

2. Hike Montaña de La Botija & Montaña Samara

If you love hiking, there’s a fantastic route that lets you combine Montaña de La Botija (2122m) and Montaña Samara (1936m) in a single walk. This hike was one of my favorite experiences on Tenerife. It’s challenging but absolutely rewarding — the views of Tenerife’s volcanic terrain are unforgettable.

This hike is located in the northern part of Tenerife, where it’s noticeably cooler and windier, so make sure to dress warmly and bring layers. Along the way, you’ll walk through unique rock formations, lava fields, and sometimes even clouds rolling over the peaks — it feels almost unreal.

Bring enough water and some snacks, and wear good hiking shoes, as parts of the trail can be steep or rocky. This walk really showed me how wild and dramatic Tenerife’s landscape is, and it ended up being one of my favorite hiking experiences on the island.

3. Discover Hidden Swimming Spots

Tenerife has so many little hidden swimming spots that are perfect for escaping the crowds. Many of them are tucked away along the coast and have small ladders leading into crystal-clear water. One of my favorite spots is Calle La Falue.

It’s quiet, peaceful, and perfect for a morning swim. Bring a towel, some snacks, and enjoy the calm before the more touristy beaches get busy. These hidden spots are my personal favorite because they give you a real sense of Tenerife’s charm, away from the typical tourist areas.

4. Sunset in La Caleta

For one of the most beautiful sunsets on the island, head to La Caleta. This charming coastal town has a wonderful vibe in the evenings. There are several great restaurants and bars nearby where you can grab dinner or cocktails while watching the sun dip into the ocean.

I absolutely loved Troqué Restaurante and Mirlo La Caleta — both had delicious food, great service, and a relaxed, friendly atmosphere. After dinner, you can wander along the waterfront, enjoy the ocean breeze, and watch the sky light up with colors. La Caleta is one of those spots where time seems to slow down, and you just want to stay and soak it all in.

5. Shopping & Las Americas Beach

If you love a mix of sun and shopping, Las Americas is the place to be. It’s a popular beach for sunbathing and surfing, but the area also has plenty of shops and boutiques. Whether you’re looking for souvenirs, beachwear, or something more upscale, you’ll find it here.

6. Take a Boat Trip

One of the best ways to see Tenerife is from the water. A boat trip offers a completely different perspective of the island. You can depart from Playa La Pinta, Puerto Colón Beach, or Playa Los Gigantes.

During the trip, keep your eyes peeled for dolphins, dramatic cliffs, and hidden coves. Some tours even allow snorkeling or swimming stops, which is a fun way to cool off. I loved how peaceful it felt out on the water, away from the crowds on the beaches. Plus, the sunset from a boat is a whole different experience — golden light, ocean breeze, and a sense of freedom.

I tried two amazing experiences:

  1. Los Cristianos – Peter Pan Pirate Boat
A respectful whale and dolphin spotting tour with the chance to swim. Family-friendly, highly rated (4.7/5 stars), and such a fun, relaxed vibe. Loved just floating on the water and enjoying the view!
  2. Costa Adeje – Catamaran Whale Tour
A 2–3 hour catamaran tour from Puerto Colón with drinks included. You’re almost guaranteed to see pilot whales and maybe some playful dolphins. A fun way to spot marine life while sipping a cocktail!

Both trips were memorable, relaxing, and perfect for photos, and I can definitely recommend them if you love boats, the ocean, and wildlife.

7. Explore the North

The northern part of Tenerife is often overlooked, but it’s full of beautiful spots. Start with Palmetum, a stunning botanical garden filled with exotic plants and peaceful walking paths.

Not far from there, you can find warm water springs, perfect for relaxing and soaking after a long day of exploring.

Another highlight is Taganana, a small village on the northern coast with traditional Canarian charm. Walking through its narrow streets, enjoying the coastal views, and trying local cuisine gives you a sense of Tenerife beyond the tourist areas. The north is quieter, greener, and full of hidden gems that are worth a day trip.

8. Have Fun at Siam Park

Even if you’re not a huge theme park fan, Siam Park is Europe’s largest water park and absolutely worth a visit. From adrenaline-pumping slides to relaxing lazy rivers, it’s fun for everyone.

After enjoying the rides, don’t miss the shopping area near the park — you can find some great deals on souvenirs, clothing, and beach essentials. It’s a nice bonus if you’re looking to combine a fun day out with a bit of shopping.

9. Eat Tapas!

No trip to Tenerife is complete without tapas. Small plates, big flavors, and lots of local specialties make every meal an adventure. Whether you’re trying grilled fish, patatas bravas, or fresh seafood, tapas is a perfect way to sample the island’s culinary culture. Pair it with a cold sangria or local wine, and you’ve got an evening to remember.

Some of my favorite spots were small, family-run restaurants where the atmosphere was just as good as the food. Tapas also give you the freedom to try a little bit of everything without committing to a huge meal — perfect for a relaxed island lifestyle.

10. Drinks, Sunset & Hard Rock Hotel

I actually stayed at the Hard Rock Hotel, and I have to say — it was absolutely amazing. The breakfast alone is something else: cava, donuts, eggs, pita, all kinds of coffee, fresh fruit juices, and so much more. There are multiple beautiful pools, great music, a play area for kids, and all the little details that make it feel like a mini paradise. It’s the perfect base for your Tenerife adventures — relaxing in style, enjoying good food, and starting your day fully energized. (I’ll add a link here later)

Even if you’re not staying there, it’s still a fantastic spot for cocktails, with great vibes and a stunning sunset view. You can easily walk along Playa El Pingue and Avenida Adeje

Finish the evening at Roca Negra Sunset Club with drinks, tapas, and live music. This combination of good food, cocktails, and watching the sunset is one of my favorite Tenerife rituals.

Tenerife truly has something for everyone. Whether you’re hiking volcanic peaks, swimming in hidden coves, shopping, or just enjoying a sunset cocktail, this island never fails to impress. I can’t wait to return and explore even more corners of this magical place.
