Tenerife is one of those destinations that surprises you every single time you visit. No matter how often I come back, I keep discovering new places, new views, and new reasons to fall in love with the island all over again. But before you book your flight, there are a few things you really should know. These are my personal Tenerife travel tips and must-knows — the kind of advice I wish someone had told me before my first trip.
Whether you’re escaping winter in Europe, planning a summer getaway, or just craving sun, nature, and good food, Tenerife truly has it all.

Tenerife Has Good Weather All Year Round
One of the biggest reasons people fall in love with Tenerife? The weather. Tenerife is often called the island of eternal spring, and honestly — that’s not an exaggeration.
If you’re visiting Europe in winter and still want sunshine, Tenerife is one of the best places you can go. Especially the southern part of the island. Thanks to Mount Teide, the volcano literally acts as a natural barrier that stops clouds from passing through. The result? The south stays warm, sunny, and dry most of the year, even when the north is covered in clouds.
I’ve visited Tenerife during winter months when the rest of Europe was freezing, and I was walking around in a T-shirt, sunglasses on, feeling like I had cheated the system. If winter sun is what you’re after, Costa Adeje, Las Americas, and Los Cristianos are perfect bases.
North vs South Tenerife: Very Different Vibes
Tenerife feels like two islands in one, and that’s something I absolutely love about it.
The north of Tenerife is greener, cooler, and more dramatic. It’s perfect for:
- Hiking and long walks
- Exploring lush landscapes and forests
- Visiting traditional villages
- Relaxing in natural pools and warm water springs
The north has a more local, untouched feel and is ideal if you love nature and slower travel. That said — I always notice something funny about myself: after a day in the north, I’m very happy to drive back south in the evening, take off my sweater, and enjoy the warmer air again. Oops.
In summer, the north is especially worth visiting — the temperatures stay pleasant, and it’s perfect if you want to escape peak heat.
My Favorite Places to Stay in Tenerife
Over the years, I’ve stayed in different parts of the island, and these are my personal favorites:
- Costa Adeje – My go-to base. Calm, beautiful beaches, great restaurants, beach clubs, and stunning sunsets.
- Los Gigantes – Famous for its dramatic cliffs, ocean views, and laid-back atmosphere.
- Los Cristianos – Lively and central, perfect for beaches and boat trips.
- Las Americas – Energetic, busy, and full of nightlife, shops, and restaurants.
I usually choose Costa Adeje because it gives me the best of both worlds: peace and comfort, but still plenty to do. If you’re looking for nightlife, Las Americas might suit you better — but for me, Costa Adeje always wins.

Rent a Car in Tenerife (Seriously, Do It)
If there’s one Tenerife travel tip I can’t stress enough: rent a car — and book it in advance.
Tenerife is bigger than it looks, and many of the most beautiful places simply aren’t reachable by public transport. With a car, you can:
- Discover hidden beaches and swimming spots
- Drive through volcanic landscapes
- Explore north and south in one day
- Stop whenever you want for viewpoints, food, or photos
Car rental in Tenerife is surprisingly affordable, especially if you book ahead. Waiting until you arrive often means higher prices and fewer options. Having a car gives you total freedom — and makes your trip so much more relaxed.
Shopping in Tenerife Is Dangerously Good
Let me warn you now: shopping in Tenerife is cheap. Like… very cheap.
Clothing, shoes, beauty products, souvenirs — everything is more affordable compared to many European destinations. So my advice? Don’t overpack. You’ll come back with way more than you arrived with. (If you’re anything like my family, definitely.)
Las Americas and Costa Adeje are great areas for shopping, but you’ll find good deals all over the island. Bringing an extra tote bag is not a bad idea.
Endless Beautiful Spots Across the Island
What makes Tenerife so special is the variety. Volcanoes, cliffs, beaches, forests, natural pools, viewpoints, and charming villages — it honestly feels like the island never runs out of beautiful places.
